Since the great state of Minnesota doesn't recognize the Indiana permit, and we all know where the socialist republic of Illinois stands, am I ok with locking up my weapon in the car with the ammo separated? I've never traveled somewhere where I my permit was not honored. Guess I gotta buy a nice knife.

    Thanks in advance

Your okay in Wisconsin, but the Peoples Republics of Illinois and Minnesota are no-go's. Just keep it locked up in the trunk unloaded and your great.

Keep in mind that in Wisconsin No-Concealed-Weapons signs on business DO carry the weight of law.

That's very good to know about Wisconsin. Thank you very much.

I take it your probably taking 80/90 to I290 to I94. I alway make an attempt to spend no money during the 90 minutes or so in Illinois.

Once you cross the Wisconsin state line, there are a bunch of gas stations and fast food on the 3rd exit. I think it's Hwy 50. I usually stop at the Speedway there to rearm.

The Wisconsin state line to the southside of Milwaukee is heavily paroled by both the sheriff and state police. Watch your speed.

I was stopped in Illinois for speeding 55 in a 50 in the 90's. I was driving a pickup with a camper I'd purchased in AZ. I had a loaded AMT backup in my hip pocket and $6000 cash on me, I had a IN LCHG and a FFL at the time. The state trooper freaked out and called for backup. The new trooper who came was a nice guy he unloaded my gun and locked it in my suitcase, informed me it was illegal to carry a loaded weapon. They kept me on the side of the road for an hour while they searched the truck & camper for drugs. Finally let me go with a warning for speeding and having wrong plates ( the truck had current AZ plates so I'd left them on it ). Figured I'm lucky I'm not breaking rocks in ILL. to this day.

You were lucky. You could have a. done time, b. lost all your money to forfeiture (and possibly the camper, too), and c. lost your guns, as part of the deal. Glad you ran into some reasonable Illinois cops.

Illinois is truly all that scares the hell out of me. I'll be staying in Minnesota for a few days but I feel like they're at least reasonable.

It's not as scary as everyone makes it out to be. Gun unloaded and in a case and you're all set. (BTW, IL courts have ruled that a latched glovebox or console meets the requirement of a case.)

Yeah, I don't sweat Illinois much. As long as it's in a case in the trunk, unloaded, you are fine.

I also always take the tollway to avoid Chicago proper.

Thank you Bill, you are correct.

I drive that route 4 or 5 times a month. I know exactly where I am going, just forgot what it was called. :D
That's totally understandable. I have to translate the numbers into names.
Around here we take the Borman to the Bishop Ford to the Flying Ryan downtown or the Borman to the Tri-state to Ohare. If we're downtown we may take the Ike or Kennedy to O'hare, depending on traffic or the Stevenson to Midway. I have no idea what the number designation is for most of them without looking at a map. And to make it more confusing, the Elgin-Ohare expressway doesn't go to Elgin, or Ohare.

Unloaded and in a case are the only requirements for IL. You can have a loaded mag in the case next to the gun and then toss it under the seat if you want. That's what I did when I lived there. If you're going near/through Chicago you need to be more careful though.

If you are going to Minnesota you would take 80 west to 294 north to 290 west to 90 west and then back to 94 west if you are going to northern Minnesota or just stay on 90 west for southern Minnesota. If you are trying to save tolls you would take 80 to 94 west to 41 north back to 94 west to Milwaukee 894 west back to 94 west.

I'm sure this is clear as mud :D

Unless you have something to do in eastern Wisconsin I've always taken I80 west to I39 and go up through Rockford when going to MN. It adds maybe 20 miles but is nice not to deal with the whole Chitcago area and associated traffic.

I 2nd this plus you only have two tolls to pay. One just as you come in to Illinois and one as you are leaving Illinois. There is a lot of construction on I 90
