I know I need one eventually, and I plan on getting it, but I was wondering if I had to have one to shoot my pistol.

I have heard from people around here that you don't have to have a license to carry if you are just taking your pistol to the range to shoot with the ammo stored seperatly in the vehicle. I'm not sure if this is true or not. I also read somewhere that some ranges will ask you for it before you shoot there. Just curious on what the actual law is here and I couldn't find it anywhere online

It is not true but it is a horribly common misconception.

We are held to the standard of the Indiana code and no amount of advice, even from law enforcement officers, will afford you any exception.

    :welcome: to :ingo:!

You've gotten this answer from the above members, but this and other questions can be found in the INGO FAQ*, linked in my signature. You're welcome to ask such questions, of course, but there aren't many IN law or other carry-type questions that aren't answered somewhere on here. (The in-forum search engine is awful, just so you know. It works, but it's temperamental.)

    Blessings,
    Bill

Yeah everyone around here is totally mistaken on the law then as I was actaully pulled over by a state trooper the last time I was coming home from the range and he even told me it was fine... but I was thinking about going to a new range and saw somewhere that the LTCH would be checked when you were checking in so it got me thinking...

A search on this site would show this same question has been covered before. You need the permit. Welcome to INGO. A search can be a good thing.

Sorry, but it has been shown numerous times on this board and elsewhere that LEOs are not always experts on the law. You got off easy. Read the FAQ and the code to educate yourself.

Check out this thread by another INGO member who got charged with a Class A Misdemeanor after an officer told him the very same thing:

Incidentally, this is also linked in the INGO FAQ.

Ya got lucky. LTCH - get it.

Some ranges check licenses because there is NO LEGAL WAY to get from your house to the range w/o one. They don't want to be caught with a bunch of felons hanging out on their property.

    :orly:

I believe that said trooper chose not to enforce the law that day...call it discretion. By the letter of the law, you WERE in violation. Period.
