From "Ballistics Theory and Design of Guns and Ammunition", by Donald E. Carlucci and Sidney S. Jacobson, CRC Press:
A gun can be loosely defined as a one-stroke internal combustion engine. In this case, the projectile is the piston and the propellant is the air–fuel mixture.
A definition like this could come in handy.

    I'll accept that definition.
Guns aren't "designed to kill" or "good for nothing other than to kill other human beings" as is often argued.

They're made to propel small pieces of metal very rapidly over long distances. Period.
The user is wholly responsible for the end result of their employment.

I got my copy from Barnes and Noble with a 25% off coupon for around $75. I'm sure you probably know this, but it is basically a textbook and is heavily involved in physics.
