    After doing some reading it makes perfect sense to have a BOB that is always ready to go when you need it. I am not expecting to need it anytime soon, and I am not one to think that zombies will be invading, but a littler preparedness never hurt anyone (much)

    So, Here's the plan
    1) Start from scratch, not reusing anything
    2) large bag that can be carried easily and contains all necessary supplies
    3) under $150 for supplies (not including food)
    4) Order everything at once for ease

    Here is what I came up with so far:

    Defense force style assault bag
    LEG-131 - Israeli Defense Force Style GREEN Assault Bag 34x15x12" Green Cotton Three Exterior Pockets

    Molle Deployment bag (To hold smaller supplies and as a day pack etc.)
    MOLLE-302 - MOLLE Deployment Bag OD Green 11.5x5.5x6" Compress Divided

    First Aid Kit
    MHR-400 - Platoon First Aid Kit, Army Digital, Molle Straps on Back Size 9.5x7x3"

    3-pack "space blankets"
    MLT-4948 - Emergency Blanket Package of 3 Double Sided Reflect-Insulate

    Bolo Machete
    36809 - 16-3/8" Bolo Machete, Polypropylene Handle, Black

    100 feet parachute cord
    MLT-5069 - Nylon Braided Cord 100 Feet GREEN OD Parachute Cord 550 Test New

    Molle Survival Pouch
    1-Compass
    1-20" Emergency Saw
    1-Box of Waterproof Matches
    1-Emergency Whistle
    1-Roll of Military Gauze Bandage, 2" x 6 yds.
    2-6" Light Stick
    1-7" Emergency Flashlight
    1- Scissors
    4-Regular Adhesive Bandages
    1-20' Roll of 1/2" Medical Tape
    1- Emergency Mirror
    MOLLE-616 - MOLLE Survival Pouch Black 5x7x2.5" Flashlight Mirror Whistle Light Sticks

    Disposable "space shelter"

    CAMP-232 - Disposable Emergency Tent Silver Reflective Material Tube Tent Seven Ft Long 2 Person, 20Ft Cord

    10-pack of water bags
    CAMP-230 - Ten Pack of 8 Liter Emergency Water Bags Completely Flat When Empty, Cut-out Handle

    Water purification tablets (24-pack)
    CAMP-185 - Aquamira Water Purification Tablets package of 24 Tablets. Meets EPA Guidelines

    Total $111 + $20 shipping ($131)

    Is this going to live in your car? At work? At home? Depending on where it's going to be, some things may need to be added or subtracted..

    In general, though, a few other things that I'd add in -

    I'd recommend a good headlamp. Flashlights are always handy, but if you're hiking around and using your hands to carry something, a headlamp can be mighty handy..

    Sunglasses?

    Whistle

    Bug dope/sunscreen

    A couple things that you also can't get from CTD, but they're also worth keeping in there, are maps, both local and state. Get them from your local police department or something.

    And maybe a couple of these??: MIL-1200 - Finnish Gas Mask, Filter and Bag New Unissued Condition

    They've got good prices, but it can take a while for them to get to you. I like name-brand stuff better, so I usually go through flashlightz.com. They're based, both corporate and warehouse, in Indy..

    I was going to suggest some more methods to make a fire as needed, but it was just covered above. I want at least three methods to make a fire if possible, and some good tender. The good old Vaseline and cotton balls seem to be a favorite everywhere.

    I'm a candle junkie and when they get to low to stay lit, I use the rest of the wax on dryer lint to make fire starters in cupcake papers. They burn forEVER...and they smell good, too. :D

    Here is the guide I used from another forum.
    A “Bug Out Bag” is different than a “Survival Kit”.

    A bug out bag is very specific and is used to get you from one location to another. Typically the destination, distance, and routes are known. The bug out bag contains what you need to make that trip as quickly and efficiently as possible.

    A common planning period for a bug out bag is three days, but modify this to suit your conditions and plans. After three days it is used up and no longer useful. This means, for example, it will contain food rather than the tools to get food, and water rather than water treatment tools.

    Some basic things found in a bug out bag include:

    * Water - At least a 1.5 liters minimum
    * Signal devices - Cyalume, Flares, Strobe
    * Map/compass/GPS
    * Food - Take enough for 1-3 days
    * Cash
    * Medical Kit
    * Multi-tool
    * Mags

    In contrast to the BOB the survival kit is meant to sustain life for an unknown time under primitive conditions and includes tools to:

    * Gather Food
    * Collect Water
    * Build a Shelter
    * Take Care of Medical Emergencies
    * Signal
    * Start Fires

    A bug out bag should be designed first to expedite your bug out, and then a primitive survival kit should be added. Keeping the two functions separate in your mind will improve the way you think about your selections. There will be some overlaps giving you efficiency and the dual design will give you some back-up gear and methods.

    A lot of your gear listed looks like first line gear to me.

    While anything is better than nothing, I suggest you start over. why? Because you plan to put this gear in a duffle bag. Ever carry a duffel bag in your hands 10 miles?

    You are well intentioned but to me it looks like you will have gear spread over two locations, home and car with neither kit complete.

    Get one set of gear done right. I would suggest it be the kit in your car. It goes where you go. Pay once cry once, buy the best. Some of my gear is 40 years old. Came off a flyer in Vietnam to me in 1971 when I was 8.

    Read 6 ways in 12 ways out. Good basic gear lists and goes from line 1 to line 4. A novice could do very well by just following those lists verbatim. Of course it is up to you to use your gear and test it and yourself.

    Put spare clothes and seasonal surival gear in the duffel bag. While my gear in my truck can get me home 24/7 year round. Soon I will add my hunting gear bag. Clothes I use for hunting are also good for winter walking and survival. So if I want to leave town and go hunt I can. If I am jammed in a winter storm in rush hour, I am also going to be fine.

    It is an excellent kit but heavy as hell for a pack. I keep one in my truck kit. You can do some fancy cooking with it.

    Also, alcohol burners SUCK in cold weather. You don't really use these in snow. For going light and cheap it is hard to beat an esbit stove with esbit fuel or triox bars and a pot or cup. You boil what you have and eat. My old man used one in the arctic 60 years ago. Good enough for me and never failed.

    You really need a plan before you buy gear or you end with a mix of light weight, back pack and base camp gear. If the purpose is to be mobile and go fast, then the goal is light weight, easy to carry, quick to use and conserve energy both in your body and in the use of the gear itself. Fuel is heavy and a limited resource.
