Based on the initial information on this new variant of COVID, I figured it would be a good idea to start a seperate thread.

Much is still unknown about how OMICRON will react where a majority of the population is vaxxed. Normally, when a virus mutates, it becomes more contagious but less lethal. The next two weeks are going to be very interesting.

I looked through the couple of COVID threads currently being posted to and they were addressing specific issues.

This variant may be a flash in the pan. Yet, the way the World Health Organization and governments around the world are reacting to it, I figured it would be a good idea to start a seperate thread. If the mods don't agree, then they can blow it away.

Question for the medically smart peoples here. A standard PCR will not find a variant. Correct? Then does someone just decide " I need to look for variants today?" or how does this work? Way too much mystery here for me.

It finds COVID, but won't tell you the strain.

Health departments do random processing of samples to see what strains are circulating i think

Not really. Who cares what strain they have. It is all treated the same.

It comes down to epidemiology for tracking what is circulating and what the powers that be want to do about it.

Flu test doesn't tell you which of 125 strains you have. Only A or B
So we're not all gonna die?
