It was out of the ordinary in office type work, not any more. My wife said that many of the younger women in the hospital just quit showing up, no call, no notice, no email, no resignation letter. These are college educated girls with training in their field. Different times.

Short notice has never been uncommon in heavy construction. Many workers have been sent home at the end of the shift according to material, scheduling or other issues. Conversely, in that environment many of those same construction workers have walked into the foreman's trailer and said, "I am not happy, get me my money," and dragged up at the end of the shift.

The business world still has a 2 week notice unspoken rule that's usually followed. Not always. I mean I've even given less time in the past when I'd lose a new position if I gave that much of a notice. I've moved jobs a lot and normally have given 2 weeks or more of a notice. It does seem the younger generation doesn't follow the same rules, for lots of things. Still, a 15 minute notice is fairly unusual.

Still a customary 2 weeks in my world as well. Again, for salaried staff. Had one give me 6 weeks. Most have another job lined up, so try to wrap up here on a positive note (no burning of bridges) and get started at the new place pretty quick.

We do have an issue with hourly staff simply going NCNS (No Call - No Show). Some even "ghost" us, and then are surprised when they don't get a paycheck and they can't log in a week later. Even more surprised when "I was busy" doesn't count as an excused absence.

Not that this behavior is the majority, but is is common enough we notice. Some small percentage of people simply have no real work ethic, and can't connect their actions to consequences.

Then there is me.. posting on INGO.

Yeah, thankfully we haven't run into a lot of the NCNS types where I work. I hate how that can happen in a professional environment, but experience counts for a lot. Hopefully a lot of those who pull that type of crap learn why it's not a smart idea.

Of course, there is the other side of that coin where a worker gives two weeks notice and the company decides to terminate them right away.

This has been an interesting thread. WT, you sure did spark some good conversation!

Where I work, if a manager gives notice, he is escorted out right away, phone/laptop taken, passwords revoked.
But he gets paid for the 2 weeks.

I've not heard of the person not getting paid in that situation. That would require actually firing the person instead.

Only a few places I've worked has this policy. Thankfully I never go to see it in action as the manager I reported to in each case was opposed to it and didn't turn in my 2 week notice. I've heard of it happening but never saw or experienced it. Not sure the mechanics behind it. It's a stupid policy, but due to some IT staff who have had admin rights who abused it during their 2 weeks.

Yeah. You never let an IT admin with "keys to the castle" stay on after notice is given. What do they have to lose if they screw up (intentionally or accidentally)? They're already leaving, what are you gonna do. Fire them? :):

Back to the stupid workers part of the thread. Just got back from Lowes. Cashiers swapped mid transaction. I paid and was waiting for my receipt.
    "Have a good day, sir!"
    "I just need my receipt."
"Oh." *stares at the screen for a long time, reading*
What she sees on the screen is "Please ask the customer for their phone number. If they refuse, enter all 9s." (I can see the screen clearly)
After 30 seconds of waiting with her clearly not understanding the situation, I say "IF you put in all 9s, it will let you bypass that screen."
"Oh, really?" *enters all 9s and hits enter. Receipt pops out* "Wow, you sure are smart."
I started to say "No, Im just smart enough to read the screen and follow simple instructions. " but instead just smiled and said thank you. SMH

I've only quit one job without official notice. The company had incentivized being fired. If I quit, I had to pay back thousands of dollars in tuition assistance. If they fired me, I did not. I told my boss maybe a month or so out that on a certain date I was no longer showing up to work. Since I was salaried they'd either need to keep paying me to not show up or fire me. They went ahead and let me quit without seeking tuition reimbursement, but I think my boss told the upper brass I'd been called back to the military. I hadn't been, I just left for the security contracting job, and she knew that.

Not sure where you work, but we prefer to try to do knowledge transfers from people before they leave. There are processes in place to help stop anything bad from happening.

That's smart, but very dependent upon the company in question. I've seen tons of companies with smart processes and tons of companies with processes that would make your head hurt they're so dumb.

Oh no, we're only number 2 in the world for manufacturing output. We're doomed.

According to that site, manufacturing is around 1/8th of our economy. China's manufacturing makes up nearly 30% their economy. It not necessarily where you're at - it's where you're heading

Unfortunately, where I work (for the next 3 months) they don't understand the concept of "knowledge transfer".
Which is probably why they run so ragged.
