I work in Danville IL. Every day we have to stop just prior to the border. I get out run across 4 lanes of traffic on I74 and hide my pistol under a rock. The nice thing is I don't have to run across traffic to get the pistol on the way home.

I'm not serious but I don't carry with me on work days. Very rarely is it left in the car. Danville is the one place I go where there are times I really wish I had it.

It sounds like your boss and you were having a friendly chat, it does not sound to me like he was encouraging you to "break the law" in any sort of official capacity.

A boss is just a guy. Guys say stuff. Guys say stuff like, "Hey, you should go over there and pinch that girl on the butt."

Here's the thing: You don't have to do it.

If you're truly worried, take the week off.

If you take your gun, you're more likely to take a few years off than to have need for it, but lightning does strike.

Edit: It is legal to carry knives, but be careful, as the laws vary by jurisdiction. IIRC, in Chicago proper, the max blade length is 2.75". IANAL YMMV.
