Should i buy a pre-packaged kit or build my own? The few i've looked at in camping stores seem pretty thin, just band-aids and gauze is this all I need?

What is essential to toss in their?

Adventure Medical has a hunter version that is fairly complete, if you wan to buy a pre-made one. I think this one also comes with a secondary smaller kit for gun shot wounds. It's not the same as a IFAK for shooters but it might be useful nonetheless.

It really depends on your level of training .

There's no use in having the latest "wonder gear" if you don't know how to use it .

While IFAK's , VOK's , and BOK's are nice you can make do without the fancy gear and if you shop around you can find most of the components cheaper than the kits .

Should I get training then? My wife taught me CPR she's red cross certified instructor. But I don't know jack about most meds. To be honest I shy away from it as I don't like needles etc.

I recently bought the SAS survival handbook and will be reading through there.

I'm biased but IMO , EVERY , MAG , family, or whatever should have at least one trained EMT-B at a minimum . This should be supplemented with a wilderness medic course .

A person trained at this ^^ minimal level should be able to handle most MINOR emergencies or at least know when they need more advanced help .

If not then I'd make time to attend one of Redneckmedic's GSW classes at the very least .

IFAK's , BOK's , VOK's , "Aid bags" don't have to be large or elaborate to be effective for most of the stuff we'll run into until TEOTWAWKI .

    My every day carry aid bag is about 6 1/2 X 6 1/2 X 3 " .

    2 Eye pads
    1 Roll of cloth tape
    1 Roll of Coflex
    1 "Ace" wrap
    1 Roll gauze
    2 Field dressings
    1 Abdominal dressing
1 50 gram Quikclot -- in case the field dressings don't work

    1 Tweezers
    4 Petrolatum gauze pads

someone trained at the first responder level is adequate....emt-b gives you the ability to drop a combi-tube,c-collar and administer or assist with a few drugs.

Wow, I feel like I stepped WAY outside my bounds of knowledge! Thanks for all of the advice on what to get. Now I need to take a class on how to use it.

Where do you get anti-biotics from? And what is the purpose of the Everclear?

Everclear can be use as a skin cleansing agent around a wound, start a fire, soak plain gauze pads to use as cleanser, and a tablespoon in warm water or lemonade (hot toddy) with peppermint candy for coughs and colds.

At least, that is why I have it in my kit.

The antibiotics are going to have to come from your pharmacist via a prescription, or directly from your doctor. If you have a family Doc that knows you and would feel comfortable, that's the best. Then there is the option of veterinary medicines that I won't go into....Evercear is as stated above plus it makes a powerful pain killer/anesthesia.

Everyone starts from square one at some time. If the missus is RC certified you already have a at-home trainer to help you.:yesway: That's a lot more than some others have. Count your blessings...

just to throw this out there. if you looking for antibiotics for treating infections in wounds and what not. if you in the woods or somewhere else and need to treat it to keep it from getting infected for a couple days/weeks. carry a bottle of honey or a good sized bag of sugar. they will act as a antibiotic when packed into a wound and keep it from getting infected. just remember you need to flush it out every 4-6 hours w/ water and then repack it. (again this is if you can't get antibiotics :)

definitely get some training. red cross and other classes are out there. and read books on it and practice on your wife to learn the proper procedures.
