I just read the article, all four weeks, and my impression is that once she began to wear the pistol she began to pay more attention to her surroundings. She mentions being in a stairwell with some strange guy behind her, and scared she might be assaulted, seeing kids play mere feet away from a pile of coats and purses, and if she has a pistol in her purse, someone else might also?

I'm sure now that she's gun free again her head is firmly buried in the sand.
