I keep seeing adds for Black Aces brand shotguns for pretty reasonable prices $300-450. They advertise a couple of versions of semi-auto shotguns that are pretty appealing for what I am interested in, namely home defense & competiton (18 - 20 inch barrel, 6-8 rnd mag tube; basically a semi-auto equivalent of the Mossberg 88 Defender that will shoot cheap Fed bird shot through high brass slugs.)

Does anyone have experience with this brand? I can't find much about them. I don't have $1,000 for a shotgun. Really don't even want to spend $600 if I can help it. I am not lacking guns I just have an itch and a niche to fill. I have a Winchester 1897 with a 20 inch barrel that runs great but I worry about putting lots of rounds through a 90 year old gun and wouldn't mind having a semi-auto soak up some recoil.

Thanks in advance for the ingun wisdom.

I had a manual shucker that I liked but my b-i-l needed it and since I just bought a semi auto 12, he got a good Christmas gift.

I bought a lever action shotgun from a member. I bought it strictly for the novelty and also because my brother's bachelor party was coming up and I wanted a fun range toy to shoot with some new timers.
Could have just been the shells (cheap slugs) but they had a hard time ejecting from the side. I think of the 15 or so we shot only one ejected, and the guy working the lever was a hoss.

I'd never use it for anything but a range toy. I don't regret buying it, because it got a lot of looks at the range. But I can't say I'd buy it again.

I have no experience with the semi autos, but I can't say I'd recommend at all. Per youtube reviews they seem very finicky with shells.

I was checking into them about a year ago. Found all negative reviews, and lots of problems. I'll say one thing they make some very pretty shotguns that don't work right. So I looked elsewhere.

Thanks for the input thus far. Sounds like everyone is is the same boat as me. They look good but not enough info on reliability to buy.

Guess I will have to keep saving for the Stoeger or Mossberg unless someone has a good report. Any other sub $400 semi-autos people have had good experiences with? Cal-Ranch has been running adds for a Citadel semi-auto shotgun with a 20 inch barrel.

While I haven't had specific experience, cheap semi-auto shotguns are generally picky about their shells.
Creating a gas system that functions reliably for a wide variety of loadings isn't as simple as might sound. And those will be hard to find under $400

A lot of the cheaper shotguns are manufactured in Turkey. A few years ago I purchased a Sarsilmaz pump and a semi-auto shotgun. They cost around $300 each. Both have extended magazines, rifle sights, scope rail, interchangeable choke tubes, and pistol grip stock. They function well, but I didn't shoot them much. I really prefer a standard shotgun stock. Turkish firearms can be a good value.

my first 12 gauge was an escort, also made in turkey. Kicked like a three legged mule. Hated shooting it, so I traded it in for something else.
Never had any issues with it, but very much prefer the mossberg.

I bought a pro model semi auto because of price and curious. After break in with some warm rounds it has never given me any issues.
I wouldnt call it a go to war gun but I trust it so far. Also it is pretty good looking.
    Worth the money so far

That's the thing I like most about mine too. The looks on the brand are great.
