I'm not in the market for a 1911. I'm replacing my HK USP 45C with a SIG P227 SAS as soon as I get the cash together. I'm just curious what 1911 offers everything a 1911 has to offer without getting price gouged for one. I'd only spend at the most $800 for a 1911.

For the price point you will get more out of the Sig or HK, 1911's are inherently more expensive to produce than those other guns.

The metallurgy in the Rugers is not bad but the Springers are made better.

$800 will get you into a decent 1911.

If you will eventually be doing upgrades on it stay away from the Sig offerings.

    1st 1911...????

Another suggestion is the newly released CZ 1911 A1. I'm definitely fond of DW models, but they can get pricey. If CZ has reverse engineered this 1911 A1 from their DW tooling, this ought to be a finely fitted 1911 that can be had new in the low $700 range.

The CZ 1911 A1 is now in stores!

I'm also a fan of what Ruger brings to the table in their SR1911 models. I shot wtburnette's full-size SR1911 last weekend, and thought it was truly a lot of bang for the buck.

I'm not sure why people say the new Colt's are inferior to the old ones. Back in the day the first thing you did with a Colt 1911 was to give it to a gunsmith to get it working reliably. The new ones work well from the factory. I have a Lightweight Commander, a Government Wiley Clapp, and a Gold Cup and all shoot very well. I would certainly consider a Colt if I were buying a 1911 today.

For $800 you can get a great 1911.
    - Springfield loaded
    - Ruger SR1911
    - Smith & Wesson E-series
Those would all be good choices and will take standard parts for future upgrades
I have shot all 3 of these and they are all good to go.
If I had to choose from the 3, probably go with the Springfield in stainless.
