Understood, so would a trade such as ammo be more considerable option for use of a personal private range?
I think if it is transactional, even if the medium of exchange is not monetary, it might leave the range owner open to increased liability and/or the need for insurance
    - like gigging for über for pay requires extra insurance while giving a friend a ride to the airport does not

IANAL or an actuary but I believe pay to play would make it a business relationship

Are you not capable of firmly telling them no? Asking for a manager and telling them no if cashier is not willing? What is not funny is most of us are likely in facial recognition databases in all the big box gun retailers. They probably know more about what you even looked at than you can remember yourself. No ID scanning required.
Why would I bother even having to argue about it? If it isn't a legal requirement why do they want it? There are already enough people wanting to spy on me without me helping the process along, and the facial recognition is less likely than you believe even at big box stores. Casinos, probably, Home Depot, not so much. That fact that some people have too much information on me does not grant permission for everyone else to try it. Would you give up your cell phone number to a retailer just because your grocer already has it from your use electronic coupons?
So you make no returns at places that require a an ID that they scan to complete returns?
Actually, no. I don't make impulse purchases and open the box in store to check for damage or missing parts before I leave. On the few occasions I have had to return something, having the original receipt has been enough

Well Everyone, I had something happen today that really blew my mind. I was contacted by Range USA about my issue with my gift card. After discussing the issue they offered a free range pass. I stated I already had a range subscription and was going to use it to teach my brother how to use his firearm. This is when it went south. I was told by melissa at that moment that I CANNOT do that and from here on out I am BANNED from the range and store. I explained I had $66 left on my gift card and my still have not used the range yet. They then stated I will receive my refund in 5 to 7 business days and feel free to have a lawyer contact them if needed.

This is why I am looking for a Private Range to rent from someone - Hell I will bring the ammo and the beer!

Here is the previous info from where this began with the gift card
I just called Range USA to inquire about my ability to bring friends and train them.

They informed me that the prohibition is for professional trainers who are training for money

There is no prohibition on members training family and friends for free.

Thank you for this information. What I have learned is the store will say one thing and then the CORP says another - I was informed no training is allowed unless by the RO, this was per the words of Melissa at there OHIO Corp.

In the same thread we have guys complaint they do not feel safe at the same place there’s are complaints there are too many rules on the range they do not like.

How can any business win with these guys?
Well, in my experience you really can't win with everyone. Name a post or subject on INGO that doesn't have at least four points of view minimum.

Now me? I'd start with a really ironclad waiver and letting the customers decide if they feel safe or not. That's their prerogative... right Ted?

Banning patrons for "instruction" (taking the OP at face value) is preposterous. I was at the range last weekend with an experienced shooter shooting a new to him rifle. Is showing him basic operation of the platform really instruction? I think not. It's basic safety, right after the four rules of gun handling that apply to every firearm.

No loading magazines at the back bench. There is absolutely no reason for that rule outside trying to waste the maximum amount of your time. It's totally absurd.

Now, full disclosure here. I was at Range USA last weekend with a close friend from out of state. It was my second choice because Parabellum was running on a three hour wait. I decided to see how RUSA was doing. We got right in after the video and waiver. We were able to share a lane and got through the whole hour without anyone barking at either of us until the end. I finished the last magazine, dropped out the magazine, locked the rifle open, and while holding it empty and up turned around to have me friend hand me the case. I got jumped for that. I didn't set foot out of the stall.

A big turn off is a sign inside the range pertaining to shotguns. No bird or buckshot anymore. I'm not taking a first time shotgun shooter and handing them a box of slugs.

The whole thing seems set up for you to just go alone, shoot one or two guns that you have crammed into a case, and leave.

In the last few months I have probably spent over a thousand dollars at Range USA, while being aware of the objections stated in previous posts. Despite them being way down the list as a choice I did my homework and checked with 5 close LGS for what I wanted. No one else had what I was looking for, and the prices I was quoted were higher than RUSA. They got the sale and a little follow up business. That doesn't mean it will continue with increasing rules and unnecessary policies like continual license scanning.

I asked about shotguns when I 1st joined in Merrillville Indiana I was told that no bird shot or buckshot was allowed and that must have been 10 years ago.

I've been going to Midwest since they opened at the 100 Center. They used to haggle a bit over used handguns, and trade-ins. Not any more. I don't pin that on them. There is less wiggle room and higher prices on everything, not just guns. I'll be selling an FLHTC in the spring. Pay me or don't. I can wait.

Funny to see her name mentioned - I just had a "light bulb" moment. In my post #44 I talked about the idiocy from corporate. The idiot I talked to was Melissa as well. Our convo about why they banned 5.45 was pretty much verbatim this:

Me: "Hi, I didn't get any straight answers from your retail staff and they gave me this number to corporate. Can you explain why 5.45x39 is suddenly outright banned at your ranges?"

Melissa: "Hi. Because it is imported ammo."

Me: "Huh? I just left your Carmel, Indiana store and had to step around the giant pallet of Magtech ammo nearly blocking the front door."

Melissa: "Oh. Well the president made it illegal."

Me: "No, he didn't. He banned Russian imports of ammo, and that import ban also includes Russian 5.56 and Russian 9x19."

Melissa: "Well, we banned it on our ranges because there are specs about 5.45 (yes, she said "there are specs about 5.45") - it's all made from different bullets that weigh more than others. The weights are different if you buy 5.45 from different makers. You need to look that up. That's why it's illegal. 5.56 is all made the same."

    Me:
    giphy-3933046285.gif

"You, you can't be serious. What did you just say? 'Different weights?' How do you explain 55-grain vs. 62-grain 5.56, or 77-grain? Or literally every other caliber? And please stop saying it is illegal. Are you referring to 7N6, which is steel core? There are plenty of other calibers that have steel core variants."

Melissa: "5.45 isn't steel core. It's steel cased. You really need to look that up. That's why you can't shoot it here."

    Me: *hangs up*

i took a buddy to indy arms and had the exact opposite happen. the rso encouraged me to step to the line and help him.

i always take the hands on approach with anyone i take to indy arms. i even helped a woman adjust her grip (only at her request).
I was going to say what is wrong with showing someone how to shoot a firearm?

Anyway I went once when it was point blank. Wasn't impressed.

Seems I remember the one in Greenwood catching on fire, did they ever figure out what caused it?

Anyway, I won't pay to go to an indoor range, I much prefer the way most do out west.
Go out on Public Land and do it for free. Only a few common sense things to follow. (Don't shoot the trees, pick up your garbage, be safe when shooting, etc)

Most indoor ranges have some really stupid rules, most of which have more to do with lawyer arse covering, then real firearms safety.
Won't go into it, but its much funner to drive out, take day camping supplies.. and just make a day of it, relax, spend all day,

Yeah there are a few downsides. ticks mostly... (blasted things). But otherwise its just much more fun and relaxed.

I do like going to a military style outdoor range once in a while. Something on the level of a Camp Perry.

And having worked as RSO there I can tell you it's against corporate policy for an RSO to train anyone. They are tasked with keeping the range safe.. If a customer doesn't know how to load a mag, for example, it is suggested that they take a class and asked to leave the range. Customers sign a waiver that states they have "basic firearms knowledge".
People in Ohio have always been pretty much clueless and that obviously hasn't changed.

Like I said, I have experienced what you and others describe at all the types of places in my original post. For the record I am against all data collection on customers. You and I certainly have the right to share with our friends but what I do not get is the need to post this stuff on the forum. INGO looks more like nextdoor everyday.

Personally I'm glad to have the right and ability to post my thoughts and experiences here, or whatever else I care to. I'd rather this place look like Nextdoor than Soviet Russia... ;)

The right and the wisdom are two different things…
Maybe you should petition to be a mod...

Healthy discussion amongst ourselves can help make us and the larger 2A community better. If it also provides some insight for those who may be in the business and also actually check out what a forum where at least some part of their potential focus group provides input, then that is not a bad thing either. The constant trying to shut down the discussion based on your personal criteria gets old.
