The timing of this thread is quite fortuitous; as I now have a 5.56 AR, I've been thinking of building a ~20" barrel 6.5 Grendel one. For those of you with experience shooting the Grendel at typical Indiana ranges, what sort of optic would you recommend? Would a 1-6x/1-8x LPVO be sufficient, or possibly something with greater magnification? I have no previous experience shooting magnified optics.
Depends on your intention for the rifle. What distance range do you have access to? Those magnification levels would be great to 300 IMO, but I like a little more past that.
With that said, people seem to trend towards overmagnification rather than under. Do you plan to hunt with it?
To be perfectly honest it'd probably mostly just be used as a range plinker, although I suppose I could also use it in classes or competition shooting as a heavier, longer-reach alternative to my 5.56 LWRC. The range at which I usually shoot doesn't have any target setup areas beyond 300, so I suppose a LPVO should suffice, then. Thanks for the advice. Only question is, 1-6 or 1-8?
