I also got some of the targets from Steel King and wanted to use it at relatively close range. The targets were rusty when I got them home, but a wire brush cleaned them up fine. I painted one up and attached it to a yard sign holder and ran it out to the range for a quick check to see how .223 and .308 would treat it at 100 meters.

Here is what the plate looked like once painted (the square is loosely 4 inches square):

I took it out to Martinsville Conservation Club to wail on it with an AR-15 and my Izzy Mauser. Pretty day:

I used the .308 NATO FMJ first because I wanted to see if the setup would hold. I drove the legs into uneven ground with the right side tight and the left side loose. I did not have time to be exact as I needed to head out for AR day.

The first hit spun the steel up and over the holder removing the paint, but otherwise not cratering the surface:

The round came apart and left some fused splash on the face of the steel:

Five rounds later and it was obvious that the paint was not going to hold.

All in all the .223 and .308 removed the remainder of the paint, and they made quite the clang. This is two shots from .223 and then two from .308:

(Yeah, the jury rigged target stand is not a long term solution).

Tyler34 showed up part way through the plinking and it was fun to talk for a few minutes. He was very patient with my rushed time at the range.

After 15 rounds of .308 and 20 rounds of .223. The steel still looked good enough to take up to Indy for AR day:

I was not sure how well this would do, and I have to say I am very happy with it!
