Armed Forces day comes & goes without notice in this country...
We have a bike ride and/or gun range time in the morning,
When the driving & firearms are parked, we break out the food & keg,
All current and former military are invited, along with family & supporters.
Keep in mind we are hillbillies, river rats, puddle jumper & ridge runners, so it's often NOT what you would expect.
We race plastic toy cars (power wheels type) down a hill,
Throw out a feed fit for the military & their families on a day off,
Have games for kids & adults alike.
This is not a visit to the grave sites like memorial day, it's not a get together for vets that excludes active duty...
It's an all inclusive fun time for everyone...
Knowing it's both hillbillies & military/vets, it CAN get offensive to those not in the military family!
There are crude jokes, there is swearing, there is alcohol consumption, and it's all in stupid good fun!
Some bug bites, some sunburns, some hangovers, some scratches & bruises...
You just have to suspend some higher brain function and go with it!
We had current nuclear reactor specialists, a current drone driver, a few field grunts, and several vets & their families.
The weekend BEFORE memorial day, the folks lower in the ranks (read NOT officers) can get leave, so we have it on armed forces day and send them back bruised, sunburned, hungover and grinning from ear to ear from too much to eat, having time with their families, general fun & games...
This is the ONLY event I know about where a vet can bet an artificial leg on a plastic car race
(And yes, it's happened, and the leg is now a trophy & good luck piece since he bet & lost.)
It's the only place you will see a guy screaming down a hill on a plastic car, in a gladiator helmet swinging an artificial leg.
If you were ever an enlisted man, you can see how this appeals to current/former military,
We aren't exactly squeamish, pretentious, overly cautious and obviously not to proud to play in the dirt!
