I would love to come and build one. However, I doubt that I would be able to get all the parts together before the time comes. I have a couple flats coming in the mail, but I doubt I will be able to find a parts kit since it seems that everybody is sold out.

Being that I don't have too many tools to bring: what do we all like to eat? I'll be bringing some food.

I think this was mentioned early on in the thread, but it bears repeating. Sometime between now and the build, we should probably ask Wabbit to come up with a sign up sheet for grub. :)

Is everyone doing 47's? Or are some guys doing 74's also?

Main reason I ask is headspace gauges. Who is bringing them?

Add me to the list of hydraulic presses. Will bring my 20 ton.

Add me to the list of rivet jigs too. AK builder type.

I am building the 5.45 now. I have gauges for 7.62 and 5.45.

Please put me in the definitely coming column please. I would also like to bring some grub to contribute. Wild Game of some sort?

    Done.

The magazine release is the first thing to build on this set.

Except for the extra swell rivets, the AK-74 receiver is built the same way as the AK-47 receiver. Unfortunately, I only have Tapco magazines in 5.45 so I have to use that for test fittings. Since this is an imported rifle, 922r has to be followed. I will install a new Tapco FCG.

Thanks for the offer but I'm okay. I need to make sure the rifle will fit the magazines I have. I'm just complaining about the scarcity/high price of the Circle 10 and 21 mags.

I use woodworking clamps to lock down the front trunnion to the receiver and C clamps to gently clamp the unsmashed front rivets to the mag release/trigger guard. The magazine fits well enough. You can also use the screws from a screw build set here to temporarily lock down the mag release.

An AK weld or screw build is just a bad idea and really lowers the value/reliability of a rifle to me. It might as well be parts. I'm just going to strip it and rebuild it with properly with rivets like it should have been.

I think I want to go with an AK-74, any problem with that?
I was interested in buying a AK-74 anyway.
I think if I go this route maybe I can have what I need by the party.
Will these kits give me what I need?
    Kit
    Bulgarian AK-74 Parts Kit
    Barrel
    AK-74 US Made 5.45x39mm, 16" Barrel, New (74)
    Rivet
    AK-Builder AK Rivet Set
    Flat
    Ak-Builder AK74 5.45 Flat

    What about a center support?

I ordered a 74 flat, rivet set and center support from
    Ak-Builder.com

Now I just need to buck-up and order a kit.

I'll be attending unless something drastic happens to change my plans.

I can bring a MAPP torch if needed, I might need to get a new bottle.

indysims, one reason I don't want to handle MAPP spot hardening is the extra cost of gas. I'm going to bend my receivers and then do my own hardening later.

I'm doing my 74 build now so you can follow over the next couple of weeks. Once I'm done with it, I'm going to make a web page for the AMD65 pistol and AK-74 for future references. If I get time, I'm going to make DVDs for everyone at the party.

This sounds good, I was actually thinking of this too, doing the hardening on my own later, or finding a shop locally to do it.

Are you posting another thread for this build or just the pics on here?

    And, I'm out :(

I just realized I have drill that weekend, which I should have known, since its damn near always the first weekend of the month.

you guys think you will still be there after about 5:30?

I haven't decided if I will have it done professionally or myself either. It will be a fun experience to build the entire thing from start to finish.

Look up a few posts and you will see the first pics of the new build. I'm just posting them here for now. No need to start a new thread and hopefully people find the build process interesting and informative.
