Authorities are searching for a man who walked through a screening checkpoint exit into the secure side of a terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport. Flights have been grounded, and passengers are being re-screened.
Homeland Security Department spokeswoman Sari Koshetz says a man was seen walking down an exit lane at Terminal C about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Once aware of the situation, TSA officials with assistance from the New York Port Authorityreviewed security videotape to identify the errant individual.
As of 8:40 p.m. Sunday, security was unable to locate that individual in the terminal.
The security line was emptied, and passengers were waiting in check-in areas at about 9 p.m.
All passengers in the secure part of the terminal were ordered to evacuate the terminal and go through the screening area once again, Fox News learned.
There is nothing beyond the report that he went the wrong way to suggest there is anything wrong or serious about this situation, a TSA official told Fox News.
The official said this type of situation has happened before where a person quite innocently and for whatever reason walks through the security area improperly.
Continental spokeswoman Susannah Thurston says it's an airport security issue not involving the Houston-based airline.
The security breach happened about 5:20 p.m. at Terminal C when a man walked through an exit on the public side to the secure "sterile" side for passengers who had cleared screening, according to the TSA
