Have had this pistol for over 30 years. Never had an issue. Went to range with it today shot over 100 rounds. Last six on first chambered round jammed. unable to clear, release chamber or cock. send it back to Smith is an issue because it is charged and unable to clear. Advice please.

New or remanufactured ammo, because it sounds like it may be a high primer.
Sometimes the wedge your cylinder and prevent it from turning.
The round did fire correct? It's not a squib with the bullet half in the throat?

There has to be a good Smith nearby that can look at it.
Take some photo's of the throat and rear of cylinder.
High primers are fairly easy to deal with.

New ammo- did not chamber proper or fire. Sitting with pistol loaded with 5 and 1 round half cocked. A bit unnerving. Called Bradis this afternoon unable to help. Need smith on south side or close to Martinsville-

I guess to make the pistol safe then send to Smith & Wesson. I hate this crap. Expect from a Junky Colt 1911 not an old Smithy revolver!

If it is a 586 no dash or a 586-1 the recall modification may be needed. If it is M stamped it was repaired.

thanks jinks I will check that out to make sure. My 586 was new around 1982 my S/N may fall in there. Problem is how to clear it and make safe to send to Smith & Wesson. I guess a call is at hand. don't understand why this problem occurs after all these years and maybe 800 rounds?

Might as well add my guess to the mix. It sounds like debris under the ejector star.
If it locked up as it tried to rotate the cylinder before firing, you should be able to push
the cylinder back out of the revolver with some force if you can push the cylinder latch forward.
