ANDERSON — Four Anderson Elementary School students were shot with a BB gun Monday that was brought to school by a fifth-grader, school officials said.
The four students suffered superficial wounds in the back and buttocks. A school nurse determined there was no penetration or skin damage and the students returned to classes after the incident, said Principal Matt Goen.

School officials detained the boy, confiscated the weapon and called his mother, who expressed shock and remorse about what had happened, Goen said. The boy apparently brought the Air Soft pistol to school concealed in the waistband of his pants.

"No parent ever expects or wants their child to bring a weapon to school," he added.
School officials didn't become aware of the gun until the fifth-grade class was at recess about 1:30 p.m. That's when the student allegedly used the weapon on his classmates, Goen said.
At least one student complained to teachers who moved to disarm and detain the boy.
"In this day and time, the security and safety of our students and staff is the No. 1 priority," Goen said. "I'm thankful we handled this as quickly as we did. ... Our staff was calm and did a good job of handling the situation."
The student will be suspended from school until an investigation is completed. In particular, Goen said school officials want to know if any other students were aware of the weapon earlier in the day prior to the shooting, Goen said.
Under Anderson Community Schools rules, bringing a weapon such as a BB gun to school is strictly prohibited and is grounds for expulsion, but officials have some leeway in determining if expulsion lasts a semester, or a full school year, Goen said.
Other disciplinary options could include an alternative school placement, or special behavioral contract between the school, and the parent and child. Those measures won't be considered until school officials have completed their investigation, according to Goen.

Following the incident, Goen sent an alert to the parents of Anderson Elementary School's approximately 600 students. And he personally called the parents of the four injured students.
School officials said they wanted to reinforce the importance of guardians and parents communicating to their students the inappropriateness of bringing look-alike weapons to school.
"It is a weapon," ACS Superintendent Terry Thompson said of BB guns. "I look at a weapon as anything that can cause bodily harm in any way."
He praised Goen and school staff for getting the situation under control quickly.
"As a school district, we are not going to tolerate anyone bringing a weapon to school or on our buses."

    1. Airsoft guns are not BB guns.
    2. IMHO it barely qualifies as a weapon. Sure you could shoot someones eye out. It is dangerous, but a weapon. This is a bad situation, we don't need extra drama.
    3. In the old days, it would have been a slingshot that he was shooting kids in the butt with. Which is more dangerous that an airsoft gun.
    4.
school officials want to know if any other students were aware of the weapon earlier in the day
Yeah, they are sure going to confess to that knowledge.

That being said, and even with my disgust at the TONS of misinformation in that article and among school officials, I agree that the kid should be suspended.
Shooting your buddies in the back yard while they are shooting at you is different than ambushing kids at recess. This kid needs help.
However, again, all the additional drama serves no purpose and is actually counterproductive to getting this kid back on track.

Kinda contradicts himself there, huh? I don't guess he realizes body parts are weapons as well, or a lot of things that are in a classroom.

Wow......I remember slingshots in grade school. Lots of them. We all had them so we could stop at the creek on the walk home and blast fish/crawdads etc.
Never remember one coming put during school.

    :+1:

This is about how I feel... Not a big deal, did he mess up? Yeah but he's a 9 year old kid who took his TOY gun to school. The kid was in the wrong, and for all we know he could be a kid that is always causing trouble, but hopefully this doesn't cause long term problems for him.

    Echoing some of the above....

    1) Kid should not have brought it to school, and certainly should not have shot it at other kids.
    2) Not a weapon, at least legally. I suppose schools can make a policy that is stricter than law
    3) Airsoft <> BB

    Where's the bacon?
Two thoughts: As said above, lots of things can become weapons... pencils, pens, a ruler a compass... you could probably do some real damage bopping someone on the head with a backpack... but zero tolerance=zero thought.

Also, as noted above, BB and airsoft are not defined as weapons in Indiana. Look for the antis to start writing legislators to "correct that oversight"/"close the airsoft loophole"/some other silly phrase. Perhaps we should begin writing to counter that idea before they begin to gain any traction... You ARE all writing your legislators in favor of good bills such as Constitutional Carry and the ending of GFZs at the state and lower levels, right?

    Blessings,
    Bill

There was a kindergartner that was suspended for talking about shooting each other WITH FREAKING BUBBLES!!!!

Kindergartner Suspended Over Bubble Gun Threat - ABC News

A 5-year-old girl was suspended from school earlier this week after she made what the school called a "terrorist threat."

Her weapon of choice? A small, Hello Kitty automatic bubble blower.

The kindergartner, who attends Mount Carmel Area Elementary School in Pennsylvania, caught administrators' attention after suggesting she and a classmate should shoot each other with bubbles.

"I think people know how harmless a bubble is. It doesn't hurt," said Robin Ficker, an attorney for the girl's family. According to Ficker, the girl, whose identity has not been released, didn't even have the bubble gun toy with her at school.

The kindergartner was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation during her 10-day suspension, which was later reduced to two days. The evaluation deemed the girl normal and not a threat to others, Ficker said.

The girl's family is considering a lawsuit against the school to get the blemish - all because of bubbles - off their daughter's record.

"The mother has tried to get the girl in another school since this time, and they won't take the little girl because of this mark on her record," Ficker said.

The suspension comes one month after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, which has created a heightened sense of alert at schools across the country.

The Mount Carmel Area School District told ABC News, "We are confident that much of the information supplied to the media may not be consistent with the facts… The Mount Carmel Area School District takes the well-being and safety of students and staff very seriously."

The administrators should have been forced to undergo the same psychological evaluation.
