Thinking about a colt 38 super. If you have or do own one I'd like your opinion on it and why it over another caliper. This would be a range gun. Thanks

38 super is a good round if you like to do speed shooting. It has a lot of power behind it but it kicks far less than a 45. You can shoot about 5 rounds in the time it takes to shoot 3 well placed 45s. 38 super rounds are easy to come by for target. I dont know about PP rounds though.

If you get one consider a barrel in 9x23 winchester. Factory 124 grain rounds at 1400 fps duplicate the famous 357 manstopper load with pretty light recoil. One of my favorite rounds!

The 38 Super is a "Super" round. Don't worry about the charts on it. IT WILL DO THE JOB. Ideal round in a 1911 IF anyone really cares.
Shop around for ammo. I think I paid $19 a box for the last I bought local.

Flat shooter, lots of potential in defensive circles. Gonna find alot more followers in competition and in foreign countries that disallow military calibers. Swaps to 9mm usually only require a barrel and mag swap so you can shoot cheap junk then switch to .38 Super for carry/fun/penetrate 1920s body armor and car bodies... :D

As for "rare" ammo naysayers, then how are so many competition guns firing this stuff? :D As halfmileharry said, shop around, get a decent deal online and buy it deep. Better yet, get a die set and have TONS of fun!

Excellent round, great for both target and defense. With CorBon 125 DPX you are looking at 1350fps in a round that will penetrate a car door and still penetrate 14 inches and expand. It is also very flat shooting...only a 4.2 inch drop at 100 yards with a 25 yard zero. Low recoil is another benefit. I have been shooting the 38 Super for about 25 years now and have yet to have a case of rimlock in the magazine btw.

My next handgun build in the works will be a STI 2011 widebody frame with a Commander upper in 38 Super for carry.

I bought rock island arms 38 super 3 weeks ago. After some feeding problems it semms to take glasser power ball ammo at 1554 fps. nicely. I'm am new to 38 super ownership but so far I like it.

I love the .38 super, owned a number of them a few years back. They are a lot more common in the southwest so ammo is easier to get there. Only reason I do not have one now is that I changed my guns to match only a few calibers. I found the .45acp is more common and easier to find. If I lived in the southwest or South American countries again it would be the .38 super.
