I know this thread will probably just make me dizzy, but I’m going to put it out there anyway.

I’m not a 1911 guy, don’t own a single one. So of course, after shooting probably 30 different guns over the past few years between my dad’s and mine, my son says that his favorite gun is a 1911 chambered in .45 ACP.

I would like to buy him one as a college graduation gift, but am looking to stay in the $1000-1500 range. What’s the best bang for the buck in that range? Looking to INGO for some help!

Colt Combat Unit guns are very nice , but hard to find. My only complaint is their insistance on using series 80 firing mechanism.

Unfortunate due to price increases Dan Wesson is out of your budget, though for $200 more a Point man is an excellent 1911 as well

Honestly $1500~ used to be the sweet spot for really nice 1911, but now it's pushing 2k+ and for that money just get a 2011.

I would be looking at a Dan Wesson or a used Les Baer. Both can be had for around $1500.

The classifieds over on 1911addicts.com is where I’d direct you to (don’t break the rules, make sure you read them first).

It’s surely the best place on the net for what you seek.

Well if you want something special I would consult Allen M for a custom one. I believe you can stay close to your budget and end up with an heirloom piece to pass down.

There are a lot of directions to go on this. On one hand, you can get a decent starter 1911 with some of the Springfield offerings. My go to used to be the DW 1911s, but that was several years back where you could pick up a Heritage for under $1k and an A2 for about $1200. I have not priced them lately.

Shot a Guardian the other day and I prefer an all steel 1911.

I'm not a 1911 guy either, but the SA Garrison can be had well below your range and they look pretty good, and leave some room for customization, later mods if desired. The SA Ronins also look pretty good.

If I was purchasing a 1911 in my price range, I'd probably get one of these and then have AllenM tune it up just a bit, but I've seen good reviews on them out of the box as well. I don't think it would be settling for lesser at all.

Would have $ left for a case of ammo as well.

You will be at $1500 but it will have that pass it down quality that you won't find in some tactical run of the mill 1911.

Smith and Wesson pro series 45. It's in your price range, very accurate, smooth, easy to aim. I have one. I have higher end 1911's, but this is better.
It's my best shooter, but I don't carry it. The Glock is lighter, no safety, and been carried and shot for years. But for 1911 fun, it's butter. If you shoot it, you probably won't give it to him.

Or a Gold Cup, 70 or 80 Series. $1,000 to $1,600 on average.

Ya know.....for a gift/first time 1911/etc......The most Colt your budget will allow is probably a pretty solid option. Recognized name, hopefully cz quality improvements...

Probably a good foundation to hand it over to AllenM let him spend the rest of your money to tune. Get a good slide-to-frame fit and let him run with it.

Personally, I might lean the SW, DW, SA direction but, for a gift, a Colt is still a Colt.

I have had several and still have a few. All were solid shooters back when I shoot more.

Once I meet Churchmouse, I had to hid them because of the external extractors.....

There is a blued version of this pistol at INGC.

Best one I ever owned is the one I have now... a Dan Wesson Guardian. I have the 9mm version, and I know a lot of 1911 guys say that's kinda sacrilege, but it's a very nicely built, and very nice shooting weapon. Picked it up used in excellent shape right here on INGO for a good price. Just because you're in the market for a gift, doesn't mean a used gun can't fill the bill. My boy's first 1911 was a HS graduation gift... and it was used. Sadly, I was poor back then, and it wasn't no Dan Wesson.
