Spent the weekend in greenfield, WI with my dad. Brought my kids up here for the holiday, and long weekend.

Yesterday, we went to a city park down the street. While sitting on a bench with my dad, my kids were playing and running around.

A police officer walks up and the interaction couldn't have been better.

Officer: how's it going this afternoon? Do you mind if I talk to you for a second?

Me: no not at all. How's it going?

Ofc: not bad. The reason I'm here is because some lady called and was nervous because someone has a gun on their hip. You're allowed to do that here and you don't seem like you're causing problems or anything.

Me: nope. Just watching my kids play.

Ofc: well that's cool. So, you two rode together? (talking about my dad and I)

    Me: yes.

Ofc: where did you guys Park?

    Me: how is that relevant?

Ofc: the school over there is 1,003 feet from this parking lot here according to the map that we use and if you don't have your CCW you could get in some trouble, or he could go get the car. Just looking out for ya.

Me: well that shouldn't be a problem since I do have a license to carry.

Ofc: ok cool. Then you're allowed to go right down the sidewalk if you want.

Me: I understand. So, is there anything else I can help you with?

Ofc: do you mind giving your name,? It's totally optional and you really don't have to, but I'm suppose to ask.

    Me:I would prefer not.

Ofc: that's totally ok. So you guys have a great afternoon and stay safe.

    Me: thanks.

This is how all interactions should go. He informed me of the school zone just in case, he didn't require me to produce my LTCH (although it was in my wallet in my pocket), he got permission for the consensual encounter. And advised me that offering my name wasn't required.

+10 for not subjecting me to an opinion about hiding my sidearm behind at shirt.

If it were me,a letter to his supervisor would be in order.I'd tell him how professional his officer was and how grateful you are. These are stories you hardly ever hear. This sounds like a prefect encounter.

I didn't catch the officers name or badge number. He was on motorcycle patrol though, so maybe they could narrow it down that way?

When I get back home, I'll look and see if there's an email address for the police chief.

    Great idea!

Please enlighten us all as to how I looked foolish during the encounter?
    Really?
    It's JMoses.
    You didn't say Sir.
    You didn't answer all questions.
You didn't look down, and remove your hat.

    Ok, that's a little sarcastic.
He's probably upset you didn't answer with your name.

    I did answer all questions.
I looked up (because I was seated and the officer was standing)
I was not wearing a hat.

And I wasn't required to identify myself.

    :)
