Photos I got today from the house. There was a large flock (25-30+) in the yard this morning. The big guy came strutting back thru looking for his girl. I went upstairs to put away laundry, and got the second picture from the bedroom window. Looking around, I counted 18 but there were probably more as they were behind trees and such.

Not seeing em, but been hearing em, it’s to dark to see very far when I take the morons out in the morning. Been hearing quite a few, pheasant also, that makes me happy.

Apparently I forgot to hit “post reply earlier this eve” just saw this.

Now second thought, is a German Shepherd Dog a legal weapon for taking turkey in Indiana? :lmfao:

Turkey loads suck. Xbows or wheelie bows work ok too.
I've shot my last arrow (or bolt) at a turkey. My hunting partner and I both made as close to perfect shots on birds as we could and didn't find either bird. Had great video of both shots an couldn't see where the shots could have been better but the birds were able to get far enough in or deep enough under the bush that we couldn't find them. I swore off archery for turkeys after that.

Thinking of dropping down to a 20ga next year.

I've never hunted turkey with a bow.
What type of tip do you use?
Is it a broadhead, or a large blunt tip?

Some broadheads have blade or collar designs to limit penetration, impart additional shock.
Some are very wide for making head shots.

Don't think blunts are legal, could be wrong though.

I tried no blind recurve hunting turkeys on a good private ground spot.
went 10 times, not even a gobble.
Go out the next yr with shotgun, same spot, and have 3 diff toms gobbling opening morning.
    Blasted one within first hour.
    Figures.

I am no turkey hunter. Called in and killed a few.
Ran #5s in a reg full choke 1100 mag when started, to fill pattern and wouldn't shoot past 35 yards.
Of course biggest tom Ive ever seen cruised around me at 40 yds.

Got a choketube gun and went to HV 4's.
Farthest was 42 yards and it worked fine.

Have some fancy Magnum Blend dental rework ammo.
Supposed to be 60 yard stuff.

Id rather use it at 40 or less.

We've always used the same broadheads we use for deer and typically have had good success though the vast majority of my kills have been with my Benelli.

We used to chase turkeys hard, hunting two or three states and covering a lot of ground on foot (and hands & knees behind decoys). For that style of hunting my Benelli was a great choice. With Winchester Longbeard XR 3.5" my partner and I have both dropped birds at over 70 yards (though neither would have taken the shot had we known they were that far). Unfortunately I don't have the physical abilities I once did so those days are over. I also don't have the mass I once had so I'm not even sure I'm going to get a second shot off trying to sight it in lol.

Ain't as good as I once was, as they say.
Here's an older video of how we used to chase em. Had a blast and all of the hunting is on private ground before anyone voices their concerns about using the decoys like we did.

Good shot on the coyote, I've discouraged a few over the years but never killed one with #4s.

    I'll eventually figure it out
They`re a tough hunt even in a good year. What I call a good year is when season opens and the toms are receptive and come to calls. I`ve seen springs where the toms didn`t seem to be interested in hens, and no calling or decoying would draw them anywhere that they didn`t already want to be.

Suggestions on a good turkey gun?
Lot`s of good shotguns out there, but the real important aspects are the choke and turkey load. I have a Browning BPS that I bought back in something like 2003 but it was only a fair turkey gun at best until I upgraded the choke and the load. I got a Carlson`s 0.665 constriction turkey choke and switched over to Federal 3rd Degree turkey loads. The patterns are impressive to say the least. The gun would be capable of killing a turkey out to 60 yards, but I will not shoot that far at game. But the choke and the load are the primary factors.

You`re exactly correct, field tips are illegal.
I wasn't asking about field tips when I asked about "blunts".
I've seen arrows carrying a HUGE head that looked like a sqashed Hackensack.
They are meant to cause blunt force injury and not do damage to meet.

It doesn't take a bunch to kill a turkey. I've used #8 shot when it was all I had. I prefer a load of #5 or 6 with a standard full choke. 12 or 20 gauge. Heck, I've killed them with an H&R .410 with 7.5's. I tried a 3" turkey load that my buddy said was Thor's hammer. It was -to me. No more of that crap.
Any shotgun will work. From a Mossberg on up as fancy as you want to go.
Suggestions on a good turkey gun?
I prefer my Stoeger double gun that I shoot CAS with.
