I see 2 kinds... The refillable ones and the ones that fit on top of a butane can. I bought some of the cheapo refillable ones and they just fall apart. A buddy got a good refillable one. I think from Napa, and he was not happy with it. The ones that fit on top of a butane can are marked for cooking. Will they work for garage work? The refillable ones tend to leak butane all over when filling them. Yes I use the crappy adapters with very little luck.

There is also the crappy ones that look like a marker.

Any brand/style that you would recommend?

I've been using one of these for occasional use for 4+ years. Occasional use for cooking (creme brulee) and cocktail cherrywood smoker, etc. Doubtful it would hold up to regular garage use...

Probably one of the "cheap ones" that you've already tried. In for the convo for a better, long-term solution as I'll always have one of these.

In the garage, I use MAPP gas and propane. Cheap and easy for work short of needing Oxy/Acetylene.
Been real happy with Bernzomatic though my experience has only been with the stupid simple manual lit ones

I have Oxy/ace and Propane. Just looking for one with more of a pinpoint flame. I have used some similar to what you posted (Harbor) that have not held up well. I was thinking of another like that or a style like one of these.

I don't need it much, maybe once a month or so.

I've never found butane to get hot enough for what I want, but I've almost always had access to hotter stuff and in the past decade or so a propane forge. +1 for at least the bernzomatic.

I was ready to jump on a Bernzomatic butane. It showed made in USA. Then when I read the reviews a lot of people posted the description says made in USA, but the torch says made in China. The reviews were less than the China ones. Also over twice the price. Bummer.

Here is a Sterno brand. Great reviews so far. Also a China product. As is everything. I might jump on it.

Oxy/acetylene here, thanks to needing it for work.

Either it works or becomes a pool of liquid :):
I have that and propane. Once in a while I need something smaller. Too much heat or flame melt plastic or rubber parts. The little butane torches work great.... When they work. I just tossed out 4 brand new butane lighters. I got frustrated with them. The 1/8" flame that lights once every 10 strikes of the ignitor and then blows out after 3 seconds. Darn safety requirements. Read the only one star review on the one I posted... If someone does not know how to use a torch they will burn the place down.....

Definitely get a MAPP gas torch head, as it will work for propane also. Propane torch heads do not work well for MAPP so they are not quite interchangeable.

For a smaller form factor try this:
