I'm diving into the AR10 world and noticed most 308s are either a 18" or 20" barrel whereas most AR15s are 16" or so. Is there a reason I'd want an 18" vs 20" barrel aside from being a bit easier to move it around?

Go easy on the guy new to 308 INGO...

Where are you finding 20 inchers!? Give me one!

Just like with AR-15s and .223/5.56, I personally like longer. Some think the bonus velocity is negligible. My SA is a 16 inch, if I had a chrono we'd probably see a difference in velocity.

    I had a 13.9 p/w 308

I'd do it again. But probably 14.5 p/w instead for a slightly better dwell time.

You don't 'need' to go past 16" - I know a lot of people with 16" 308s and they're more than capable. Just look up some ballistic gel tests on youtube.

It's like saying the 10.5 AR in 5.56 is useless compared to 20" ARs. Lots of dead guys will disagree.

Mountains mullets America, I appreciate that he tells you what he's going to do, does it, then shows results, with no extra talking. He's well spoken and man I wish I had that kind of distance to play with!

Another thing to pay attention to is the construction of the barrel. A stainless steel heavy profile barrel in 16" should theoretically be more precise than a 16" pencil barrel, though weighing a little more.

Have you looked at a short 6.5 creedmoor? There is a guy on YouTube "mullets America" or something like that, he's been shooting a 14.5" 6.5 creedmoor the ballistics are equal to a 20" .308.
Knights is doing a 14.5 6.5cm I believe and I think LMT already offers one.

A lot of people playing with 14.5cm right now and it makes a lot of sense.

I still refuse to buy into the modern times with 6.5 - even though I'm not an old timer, I just like the fact that 308 is over 3x as old as me and that there's a LOT of it sitting around in case society stops tomorrow. So I'm stuck with 308 for the foreseeable future.

But 14.5cm is the way to go on this if OP is willing.

308 is old and proven... not saying 6.5 isn't good, but 308 is where my interests lie right now.

    Great feedback all!

Yep, I think LMT's is even a 13". I like 308 that's what my ar10 is chambered in, but I am considering swapping to a 13.7-14.5" 6.5 after this hoard of 308 ammo is gone.

Anybody that likes the short barrels, more power to them, well maybe not power, but anyway, I just don't like the blast and noise so I go longer.

Are you suggesting a one size fits all for calibers? There's no difference in requirements for PRS bench shooting vs 3 gun course running?

Or for carbines meant for people who will be in vehicles and then going into something like a house?

Everyone should use 20-24" barrels for 308 and 20" barrels for 5.56 because that's what the caliber was built on - from long range bench shooting to backpack truck guns?

12 gauge shotguns should all be 30" with chokes as well, even for the breaching shotguns the army or marines use.

I totally agree with you if this is your reasoning. Even 1" short from the intended length is an atrocity and should be illegal.
