I was in Whittier last summer and talked to some harbor workers about the ferries. They are looking forward to the entire Alaskan Marine Highway getting staffed and back on schedule.
It certainly is THE way to get to Alaska. It is the no passport, take fairly much whatever you want with you. (The exception is anything that makes large explosions), avoid Commie Canada.. and not fly, plus the sights are awesome.

My plan in the summer of 2025 is to drive up to Skilak Lake, AK. Should take about eight days. Daughter wants to ride up with me. Our cabin is on an island on the lake. After two-three weeks, we would drive down to Whittier and take the ferry for four-five days back to Bellingham. Cost will be around $4500 for the ferry.

Friend from Anchorage is planning on picking up a new truck this summer in Salt Lake City. I may fly out to Salt Lake and help him drive up to Anchorage. Then I would spend a week or two at the cabin and then fly home.

We hiked out to Skilak Lake last summer. Absolutely beautiful!

I just bought plane tickets and reserved a cabin for a couple of days in Katchemak Bay State Park this week for a trip in June. After that we're road tripping the northern part of the state for a week before we have to fly back.

I should have enough vacation saved up for a month-long road trip in 2025, so we're hoping to finally do the big drive next year.

The trees around Skilak used to be really beautiful before the last forest fire. In a few more years, most of the damage will be overgrown. Caribou Island is on the eastern side of the lake. The forest over there has not burned in many, many years. If it ever catches fire, the Forest Service may order an evacuation of the island and let everything burn. The federal government has wanted the 50 or so owners of private land in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge out since the 1980's. They tried to do it by court order but the landowners fought back and won the case.

You havent been watching that border crossing reality show, and it shows. They're damn good at finding what you dont want them to find.

But dont watch it because it will also just tick you off to no end and remind you how awful our customs folks are.

"Hi, im here for a month on vacation."
    "you arent here to work?"
    "No."
"How much do you have in the bank? How much do you have on you? Who are you staying with and what is their number?"
(goes to the back and makes phone calls)
"Yeah, we saw you wouldnt have enough to live on for a month 'on vacation', and your friend told us you are starting a new job on Monday and dont plan on leaving. And you need a work permit to work here, which you didnt get. So you are being denied entry. Do you want the 4pm flight back to your country or the 8:30 flight? Because you aint staying here."

Detecting and deterring illegal immigrant workers sounds like exactly the sort of thing border enforcement should be doing for any sovereign nation. Maybe we should try it on our southern border.

But, yeah, hidden compartments are risky AF. It'll work right up until it doesn't.

Yeah, that's a huge burn area. It would have been cool to see it before the fire but I imagine it'll re-forest pretty quickly. We hiked up to a hilltop overlook on the north side of the lake, and could see pretty much the whole lake from up there, so I'm sure we saw your island. What a great place to go to get away from the rest of the world!

Yeah, the Canadian gun law was always a myth, like a year ago they even got a notice to the licensed gun owner from the RCMP about surrendering your broomsticks for the greater peace something, pretty bull to me...

Yep, last time I crossed the border I made one smartass comment and off to search we went.

Joke was on them as I had a Swiss Army knife in my pocket. :)

They asked us 100 times if we were working, I’d be Leary of anything these days. Sad.
Never "sorry" to ask a Canadian lol :lmfao:

I've never had any issues going into Canada. I have had problems coming back into the USA.
I can so relate. Even when I was on tour going to Mexico and Canada. As soon as they know I was a citizen, the demeanor changed. But the last time I went didn't have any problems on either side. That was in Sault Ste. Marie. Had to go thru immigration to spend the day in Canada because the ol lady has a different last name than I do, and she had never been there. Just took about 15 or so minutes for them to ask their questions and put it in their computer. The way back, was asked the usual questions of how long, did you buy anything? And that will be $4 for the toll bridge. Now with my ex-wife in Nigra Falls, the boarder agent asked her where she was born and spouted out Indiana and I snickers. That got a big frown from the agent. She was actually born in Michigan. lol and he told her that he meant what country.

Canadian enforcement of their crazy gun laws is, well, crazy! Reports are surfacing of RCMP showing up at citizens’ houses demanding to look at their weapons for possible confiscation. In this instance, why tempt fate?

It also helps when some agents are not jerks and they know one of the transport workers.

We were waiting to get off the boat in Sandusky and my wife's aunt who lives on the island we visit works on the ferry.
She is standing next to us while we stood by the gangway waiting our turn. She yelled off the boat to one of the TSA guys "Hey! Search these idiots. They've got stuff!" and pointed to us.

We got off the boat and after leaving the interview window We passed that guy and he looked at us and just shook his head like he felt sorry for us knowing her. LOL

(no searches and they didnt hassle us for the US apples we didnt eat and were bringing back in)
