So i just got a police surplus glock 22, gun has minimal holster wear and looks unfired for like $260, but everyone seems to hate .40 with a passion, but why?

I understand there's more recoil and it can be if it's happy, and in compact and subcompact guns it sucks to shoot, but it doesn't seem that bad in service pistols.

The ammo isn't incredibly expensive and available. It's easy enough to shoot in a a full size gun. It seems to perform better then 9mm with barrier penetration and even cheap .40 JHPs perform as well as if not better then 9mm. Even the flat nose .40 FMJ is not a horrible defensive round(over penetration aside6
    ).

I get people who call it .40 Short and Weak and want to carry full house 10mm and it's good for hunting. but looking at most ammunition, testing, full power 10 mm either over expands or over penetrates with most modern defensive ammunition.

And the well regarded defensive/duty JHP loadings in 10mm are running more or less at hot .40 S&W velocities.

I understand why people don't like it for concealed carry, but why all the hate?

If ai had to use it as a cop gun, or in a home defense pistol it seems like it is a good middle of the round round for that purpose

No hate on .40 here. Personally I got out of the caliber years ago mostly because I wanted to consolidate and stock pile NATO calibers. Kinda wished I had kept one or two around when the ammo got scarce a few years ago. Seemed. 40 was the only thing available then. Might pick up another G23 just to have.

I've got a gen 1 series22. Its not that I hate it, its actually a good gun. But, the recoil is what call neurotic and just not enjoyable to shoot. Mine is extremely accurate it just takes more control then I wanna give it. Bought it in 91 I think. I would not kick it out of bed in SHTF situation, just not my idea of fun to shoot.

Legal for deer hunting in Indiana, so there's that...

I don't find 10mm all that snappy out of a G40, though I haven't tried .40 S&W out of it. I don't reload that yet, so I don't shoot it, though I have plenty of brass sorted out from 9mm and plenty of bullets that I got for 10mm. And the 10mm dies work, so maybe I'll cook up a few in the future.

Because it sucks balls man. 40 Short and Whimpy at its heart is just a bastardized pug loaded 10 auto.

You can see the hate on the used gun market. 40 S&W guns always sells for almost 50 to 100 less.

i'm gonna ask you a question about 10mm though.

Show me a full power 700 Ft Ib + 10mm loading that doesn't penetrate deeper then 18 inches that expands more then a similar bullet in either .40 or 10mm loaded to FBI specs.

I would like to see it as it seems either the bullets over expand or the hollow point pedals peel back and the round overpenetrates.

That is the attractive part of 10MM, that it can absolutely annihilate things.. then you see it out of a Carbine barrel!

Because there are tougher critters out there then two legged weasels.

But slightly more seriously, its just a matter of popularity. 9mm is the king right now, It is (relatively) cheap, available and does the job in most SD, duty and competition requirements.

My question isn't why all the hate for .40 but why not more love for 357 sig....

I don't hate on the .40. I liked my Xd40 and I got it for a great price. I just thought since I had multiple 9mm's it was easier to just buy ammo for them instead of buying multiple calibers of ammo. Kind of wish I had the Xd back.

I feel the same way about .357 sig

Sure it's a bit snappy, but i'm sure with a full size gun and the compensators we have today you could get recoil down to +p 9mm levels

I'm actually looking to do a .357 sig gun for home defense

People like to turn things more controversial than they are. The .40 S&W still works. It just doesn't do anything significantly better (or worse) than current 9mm offerings at the cost of more recoil and less capacity. Also rougher on the gun, given how many were 9mm designs converted to .40. Most people won't shoot enough for it to matter, even in the guns it matters in, though.

At this point, bullet selection matters more than caliber selection in the common duty calibers.

I didn't sell any of my .40s, but I didn't buy any new ones either. Same for .45 Auto.
