I understand your frustrations OP. It took me close to three years to get a gun back from them after I found out they had possession of it.

The pistol had been stolen in a home burglary several years prior. They never even notified me that it had been recovered. They only reason I found out was because I followed up directly with the detective of my case every year. He looked it up and found out the county had been sitting on it for nearly a year. It was a huge pain to actually get it released. I got the run around and made several trips down to the City-County building, but eventually did get it back.
Any ideas as to why they make this so difficult? Surely there isn’t a benefit for them when it comes to storing it?

I'm sure part of it is because it's one way an anti-gun administration can get away with obstructing our rights as much as possible in an otherwise pro-2nd Amendment state.
There's a strong anti-gun element in Indy that would outlaw our gun rights if they could get away with it.
Anybody remember the City Council and the Rozelle Boyd agenda many years ago?

And, if people leave, replacements will keep doing it, cause that's how we always did it

Not true and I would know. Thanks for trying.
Go on...what did I miss? There are a handful of civilian employees that work in the property room in the basement of the City-County Bldg. They are IMPD employees and are supervised by an IMPD ranked officer. They have nothing to do with MCSO. Unless MCSO runs their own property room at the jail.

Can't go into detail, but there has been some turnover in the property room, so keep trying. With the old person, it wasn't likely an anti firearms bent, it was more of.. "If I release this firearm, and someone later comes for it for some case, etc. Its me they will crucify if they need it after I release it"

There are a number of places unclaimed guns could go in the City/County. For example, there is at least one room, that would put most gun shops to shame 50 times over. Every inch of the walls are covered by handguns on pegs..
Lets just say the city likely didn't pay for most of them.....

This room would likely make most on this forum rapture in permanent bliss....

But then again there is another room with Bicycles like that...

    I shake my head.

So you are saying it's not just firearms that they steal?

Some turnover? That's an understatement. They are on the verge of shutting down from 24/7 status. Civilian employees are paid so poorly. Oh, I'm aware of the Crime Lab firearm room. Machine guns, pistols, rifles, VERY COOL. I've also seen the carboard barrels of long guns in the property room, ready for disposal.

They are there rather than the shredder. Unclaimed firearms get shredded.
Serious question, after how much time? And so, if you don't claim it, the firearm gets shredded.

If you do claim it, it just sits there forever and sounds like you never get it back without getting a lawyer to assist?

How does one get info on or visit this room of bicycles? I had one stolen that is sentimental. It was registered with Carmel PD but stolen in Indy.

Law enforcement not returning property, of any kind, to its rightful owner once it's cleared for return is wrong. Personnel turnover, right think-wrong think, understaffed and all of the other excuses are BS. It cannot be accidental that police departments, ahem, IMPD, ahem, don't do what is legally right. Done with the evidence? You have a rightful owner requesting return of the former evidence? Give. It. Back. Posthaste.

I agree. Bureaucrats only respond to legal threats unfortunately.

I got to see the Crime Lab room once. I wasn't really into guns at the time, and I was there for other things, so I didn't get to spend much time looking.

Now I wish I would have looked around more.
