Another LFD 700 Maduro this afternoon while listening to some Hank Williams and loading ammo cans and magazines.

    There are worse days!

On @Bigtanker ’s advice, haven’t lit it yet but wow, it smells so good out of the cellophane!

Picked up my first Liga Privada tonight, I’ll probably have it tomorrow after my morning hike.

Rocky Patel vintage 1999 Connecticut wrap to celebrate my kids kicking butt in their first shooting competition. (My first experience also with shooting sports) And decided I was so proud had a Gurkha berserker also

Been thinking about getting into smoking cigars, but really don't know much about them. Anyone care to educate an ignorant Texas redneck about cigars?
This is mostly general info as there are always exceptions. The lighter the wrapper, the milder the cigar. And just because it's expensive ($12-15 and up) doesn't mean you'll like it.

Sampler packs are a good place to start. Cigarbid.com is an auction site where you can get some good deals. A cigar cutter and or a punch makes life easier. A Tupperware type container with a humidifier gel stick is all you need to keep them in good condition.

There are flavored and infused cigars too. These offer a different, sometimes smoother flavor.

When you have one can affect how you like it too. I prefer to be alone. If I'm doing something constructive like mowing the lawn or building something, it just doesn't taste as good. Also, if I'm talking with a bunch of friends I really don't concentrate on it either so it seems like I miss out on a good cigar.

What you have to drink or snack on while you're having a cigar will affect the taste too. To me, coffee pairs really good with just about any cigar. Some folks like whiskey or bourbon or another alcohol. Some folks like root beer or another sugary drink. It's all in what you experiment with and what seems to work for you.

@Bigtanker hit the nail on the head, I'll add more. Naturally this is based on my own experience and opinion.

Flavored cigars: getting flavored cigars is like going into a throw down tough guy biker bar and asking for a Cosmo. We smoke cigars bc we like the taste of tobacco, flavored tobacco is best in a pipe.

As above maybe you'll like the $8 stick over the $30 stick. Price doesn't dictate what you'll like. For instance my fav stick at the cigar lounge is $30 bucks my buddy's favorite is like $8. At the end of the day it's your money so smoke what you like.

Just be sure to try different brands and at different price ranges. Really explore and find what you like. There are lots of amazing cigars referenced in this thread. It's real easy to fall into smoking the same 3 cigars all the time.

It's amazing how a bad cut in a cigar can ruin it for you. Be sure to get good quality cutters.

A straight cut will work anywhere, I personally just don't like a straight cut.

A v cut is just as versatile and in my opinion the best option.

A punch is great but can't be used in all cigars. If you use it in the larger ring gauge cigars it can lead to a really nasty taste.

If you are smoking a box pressed cigars (kinda square vs round) I find it's best to use a vcut top to bottom. Meaning cut across the shortest distance especially if it's padron other wise it will fray on you really bad.

Something you may expect, which is very very common for new cigar smokers.
For new cigar smokers the yummy new flavor triggers you to salivate a lot which will mix with the tobacco and as you swallow all the extra spit it will lead to a stomach ache. Which will then in turn turn new smokers off. As you smoke more this will happen less.

Don't use a zippo to light your cigar the gas will change the taste of your cigar. Start off with a bic or better yet matches then graduate up into nice torch lighters if you get into it.

Good cigars to start on any of the oliva or nub cigars. High quality mild price and run the range on flavors or boldness. Then branch out from there following your tastes.

I would recommend hitting up cigarsdaily on YouTube he has a lot to teach and a great attitude towards cigars.

I never knew that about salivating more…… I need a spittoon when I smoke.

I’ve also found the V cut to be my favorite, I even use them on figarados.

To add, think about what kinds of food or drinks you prefer, if you enjoy spicy food, you’d probably enjoy a good Nicaraguan stick for its boldness, or if you prefer a lighter flavor a Connecticut might be more of your preference. Personally, I enjoy a Maduro, I’ve yet to have a Connecticut I’ve really enjoyed. Some infused cigars are pretty good, but stay away from swisher sweet anything, those are giant cigarettes with a sweet tip.

One tip that will come in handy at some point, when you smoke one too fast and get the dreaded buzz, eating something sweet will help it go away.

Just remember, relax, take your time smoking it, never rush a good cigar.
