Unless you got a real old car they don't do the tube in the exhaust thing. They plug into the OBD port and download everywhere you've been and put it in a government database accessible to every alphabet agency. This data is linked to your EZPass history.

Maybe that last part doesn't need purple?
Your phone is already doing that

when you get real old they do the tube in the exhaust to you, not your car.

Modern cars and trucks have an emissions system health monitor in the ECM. It indicates that the emissions system is OK or that there is a problem with one or more of the system's components. We were told at the check station that the BMV started checking this system health monitor a couple years ago and it is now a requirement to pass the emission check. My wife's Acura was 5 yrs old and subject to this check two years ago. It signaled a problem with the emissions system so the car would not pass. She had to take the car to to the Acura dealer in Merrillville and it ultimately cost us in the neighborhood of $500 for them to determine that we had a bad PCV valve. I recall being pretty angry and feeling ripped off at the time.

It's basically vehicles 97 and up. That's when OBD 2 was made mandatory for all vehicles. Basically if you have a check engine light in you fail. Doesn't matter if it's emissions related or not.
You also won't get away with clearing the check engine light and running to emissions real quick. Certain monitors have to be set and they can tell

The car never had a visible check engine light and there were no diagnostic codes being thrown, at least that was what we were told. That was frustrating because the service guys were kind of working through it by trial and error and that's what drove the cost up. Maybe we took it to the wrong place. I'm no mechanic and am at the mercy of those who work on my vehicles when it comes to engine stuff.

I upgraded my snow clearing capability this afternoon. While my 10 yr old Toro Powerclear still does a good job with most snow, it choked last Winter on the snow that the town piled into the end of my driveway. I have reached an age where I need to start curtailing my snow shoveling activities.
