Maybe one of our steel mill guys can chime in, but I think "coking coal" is used for blast furnaces and the like for steel making. "Thermal coal" is what is used in power plants. I wonder if that increase in exports is hurting the domestic steel makers by driving up coal pricing or if it's not been a factor.

Like it or not, our economy and China's economy are pretty intertangled.

Not a steel mill guy but your pretty spot on, coking coal is used to make coke which is what the mills use. And the coke plants are some nasty places.
Can't help it, this reminds me of the Irish starving while the lords shipped their grain harvests out of the country.
How many people do you see starving? The US has the fattest poor people in the world.

We have been selling coal to the Chinese for years.

One guy I knew years ago worked the river barges. Anyway he said all they did was run “dirty” coal down to New Orleans to get loaded onto ships to sell around the world and then would run back up river with “cleaner” burning coal to bring to the power plants of the Midwest

They wanted to depopulate Ireland if I remember correctly.
I know the lords wanted to make a profit but I don't recommember whether there was an intent to cut back on the numbers or not.

Coal and Coke has gone up.
    But there are multiple reasons.
More US coke plants shutting down due to increasingly stringent EPA requirements.
More steel mills needing a dwindling supply of coke.
Spare parts have gone up, therefore anything using parts goes up.
    and so on

I have a considerable position in a coal holding company that has finally turned green for the first time in the last 2 years. It took a green energy Democrat to get into office for my coal stock to go up.

All signs point to it soaring in the next 12-18 months too.
