Being I started in the USAF in 1986 I'll be an oddball. S&W Model 15 revolver. Transitioned to the M9 in 1991 (they tried in 1989 but several of of us bucked as we hated the M9 at first)

Learned to love the M9 especially after 1999 when the USAF was issues JHP 9mm at stateside bases M4 was good too.

My favorite heavy in my Nuke Security days was the MK 19

No military time, but enjoyed shooting my Uncle's M1 Carbine, and his M1 Garand. I do have a 1911A1, and an AR15, and both are fun. I think the 1911 and the M1 Garand would hold their own.
Uncle was a WW2 Vet, and showed me how to clean and lube guns at an early age.

So the M249 1st gen is not a good weapon!
Strange the Belgian M249 seem to work ok when
I was hanging out with them.

I dare you to get 100 RDS though a 1st gen M249 without a malfunction.
    2nd gen maybe 400 RDS !

The one I was issued was definitely first generation (1988). I never had issues as long as it was lightly oiled. Run it dry = problems. I admit I never tried to run it in a desert environment but did have it with me during deployments to Korea in the Winter and some nice government funded vacations to Central America.
