    Not far from the tree
You all can make your own choices, but I already try to avoid CAFO raised meat. What we don’t hunt or raise on our own we try to buy from small local farmers whose values match ours. The best bacon we’ve ever had comes from pigs we’ve slaughtered, or ones we bought from friends.
Admire your values but it can be tough to do feeding just a coupla old farts. More trouble to source than the lovely Mrs Patience is willing to go through. Although we do eat at least one deer and several tens of squirrels every year.

The National Pork Producers Council has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for federal aid to help pay for retrofitting hog facilities around the nation to fill the gap.
I fail to see why farmers should get federal money to comply with a single state's legslative requirements.

If the California market wants this product, they can pay for it. If no one's producing it, their state can fund all the renovations needed.
Lead by example, not by declaration.

Exactly the same here, we eat some off the land, if required we could eat a lot more. I like canned stuff and the occasional fast food though.

Like most California ag laws, the real purpose is to force people in the state to buy food from those companies approved, read kickback, by the state. Been going on for years, I remember when they set milk specifications in such a way that only certain dairies, read kickback, could sell. There was a suit filed by a company in Wisconsin but I don't remember how far it went. The state's argument at the time was that it was only looking out for the health of it's citizens. Now the argument is farming morality. Just another money making program dressed up in a pious costume. Scamifornia.
