    1. The BS propaganda that the media started putting out yesterday that gas sales had jumped 40%. Not possible, I might believe it if they said 10 but not 40

Perhaps someone with some fueling station experience could help us with the numbers but surely most gas stations have 3-4 days of normal fuel use in the tanks. That would mean if we are running out now that the supply chains are stretched thin.

The Colonial pipeline was shutdown on May 7th, so we are now on day 5 of that disruption.

So, what is this "WE" you talking about??

There's no nationwide disruption. I'm not seeing any news reports outside of the southeast and east coast talking about gas lines and stations out of product. I could certainly see some planned deliveries to un-effected places that are nearer to the effected region being shuttled around.

That 40% was in the effected regions, it was 20% nationwide, which, while it would unusual in normal times, we aren't in normal times.

Just in March, there was an 18% jump in demand, so a 20% nationwide jump in demand isn't unprecedented.

I want to be clear, modern civilization is a mostly fragile chain of systems highly dependent on each other. Vital parts are not resilient or secure. While this incident is showing the vulnerabilities, the entire system is not broke.

One thing with this particular incident that is being missed, the pipeline was shutdown by the company, not by hackers. Ransomware caused a shutdown (more likely locked up) the company servers. Out of an abundance of caution the shutdown the pipelines.

I could imagine the conversation went something like

Corporate executiveso our data is being held ransom, can they effect our pipeline systems?

head of cyber security: well, probably not, but there’s no guarantee. Someone could have saved a document with our contract systems passwords which would allow the group to access the controls.

    CE: so what’s the likelihood?

HoCS: greater than zero, less than 100 percent.

And they got the pipeline operational...

The Colonial Pipeline has returned to operations following a cyberattack that snarled gas supply for the eastern U.S. for days, according to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

"Following this restart, it will take several days for the product delivery supply chain to return to normal," Colonial Pipeline said in a statement. "Some markets served by Colonial Pipeline may experience, or continue to experience, intermittent service interruptions during the start-up period."

"Colonial will move as much gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel as is safely possible and will continue to do so until markets return to normal," the statement added.

“Adding to the logistical chaos rippling through the country is a bridge closure across the Mississippi River between West Memphis, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee due to a fracture in the frame, according to local news WREG.

After a routine inspection Tuesday, officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced that the Hernando de Soto Bridge would be closed due to a crack on the bottom side of the bridge truss.”

Day late and a dollar short. This is what should have come out Sunday.

President Joe Biden said he expects “good news” soon about a major fuel pipeline that was shut down by a ransomware attack last week and that he would allow the military to help transport gas to parts of the country that are running out.

Tell the "hackers" we're paying the ransom, get the NSA to root them out, drop a JDAM on their head. These are massive, disruptive, dangerous, costly events and we need to start treating them as such and hunting down and killing the people who perpetrate them just like we do with regular terrorists.
Wrong President. You’ll have to wait 3 1/2 years.

My desired punishment for hackers is repeated blows to their nutsack with a ball-peen hammer.

Yet another nail in the Democrat party coffin in 2022. How long will this keep up? What kind of crazy laws will they pass with people worked into yet more fear with this latest crisis?

Have you heard of that happening?

When we were still a public company our board of directors actually pushed security as a priority, The CEO didn't have much of a say in it.
The CISO of Equifax retired immediately after their massive hack . I'm guessing that wasn't voluntary.

Guess she didn't have another use for that music degree

Still don't understand why a Windows machine getting locked out by ransomware can't be remedied by unplugging the tower and replacing it with a backup that is already configured and ready to go.

In freaking 1995 all this stuff was run on a big metal control console, and it couldn't go down because some idiot replied to a phishing email with their account credentials. We're moving backwards because companies are too lazy and cheap to air gap their systems.

    I'd prefer Rangers or SEALs.
Just in case there is a mix up.
