Skimmed this when it popped back up. I was kind of wondering why shoulder holster didn't seem to be an option of you were adopting a sport coat as part of the look? Reason I'm asking is I have no experience carrying this way and was just wondering if it is inherently slower or less efficient

If someone has a link to this discussion please post it. I searched but didn't see anything. We have passed a concealed carry policy at out church. Most people won't take advantage of this and that is fine. For others it won't change much. For me, as someone who has appendix carried for more than 10 years now it is going to be a change. As an elder at the church I can not dress how I would to make appendix carry viable. From what I can see the best course of action would basically be dress like a police detective. During the summer months this is probably going to be a bit uncomfortable but I get cold much easier than I get hot so it will be doable.

So is there anyone here who carries at church and dresses well? By that I mean no untucked shirts mainly. If so, give me a quick rundown of how you do it please? BTW, I will probably use OWB not IWB as I just got a bunch of dress pants that fit and really don't want to by a bunch more in a bigger size.

Do you think God cares what you wear?

Honestly I quit using shoulder holsters when I stopped worrying about what was cool versus what is safe, efficient, and effective. In addition to which it is not a good idea to drastically change your carry methods.

Man, this is a tough one in some regards. Depending on your church (and I have consulted for more than a few churches in my professional days), depending on sensitivity of congregation and the board, even "looking" the part, or like you are carrying is a subject of concern and conversation to many. This seems to be the question of the day. How to NOT look like a gun guy, when you can't look like a gun guy. Untucked shirts, vests, anything "tacti-cool" are the norm for EDC for the majority, but it can look...well less than "fitting in" when talking about a church crowd. While I agree in some ways with the argument of "have them just get used to it", if you are dealing with an older population especially, and if that population is from a more pacifist denomination, they won't be just getting used to it, ever. So...to the point. Most that I work with and know personally (including myself when not "working" in official capacity) wear a jacket, or blazer, or a nice dressy/casual 3/4 zip pull over with a dress shirt under allowing easily concealed carry pretty much anywhere on the waist...the ideal "at ready" location. As one who carries daily and has for about 33+ years professionally and "socially"...the "get used to it" part is our burden to deal with, not theirs. Be reasonable in regards to what you carry. Find a way that works, train often with that carry position, and survive the day.

Hollow out a bible and carry it in there.

It is only mercy and grace that will keep me out of hades.

pocket derringer or small revolver in front pocket:dunno:
I don't carry at church to defend against a mugger at bad breath distances. I carry in case some whack job shows up with a rifle thinking he's gonna shoot up a room full of sitting ducks. For me that means having a full size pistol, weapon mounted light, and soon, a red dot.

A deringer isn't going to cut it.

I've noticed that at our church, if a man is wearing a jacket or blazer, this is the reason.
I did note that the OP said he was an elder and at his church he was expected to dress up. As long a members of the congregation are associating 'dressed up' with a position of authority, (ie. Elder) it probably won't scream GUN GUY.

You are correct. Wearing a gun is uncommon at our churches, but wearing a jacket or suit is not, especially among those in elected positions.
