Hell, it wasn't even a civil war.

In a civil war, citizens of the same country battle to take over governance of that country. The confederates never attempted to take over anything.... they were simply walking away.

"War for Southern Independence" or "War of Northern Aggression" are more appropriate terms.

I'm not sure about at the time, but as far as I know now, they do not have the right to do so.

With the explicit exception of Texas, which has a special right to secede.

I guess I just interpreted Thomas Jefferson saying when a government becomes destructive it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and form a new government, combined with the fact the constitution doesn’t (or didn’t at the time) forbid states ability to secede.

Actually I believe there was a state that kept threatening to secede, and nobody ever challenged the legality of it. Been a while since I’ve read up on it tho might have to do some digging later

But if it isn’t illegal, then it’s legal, right? So if there were nothing forbidding it then it would have been allowed?
