Today, my girlfriend and I went to Lighthouse Mall in Michigan City to pick up a couple things for her friend's birthday. She wanted to look around a bit which doesn't bother me. We go to the Coach Store. As I am sure many are aware, they are freakin' EXPENSIVE! $700 for the big one she wanted! She didn't buy it. Why? It's made in China.

I know there are a lot of people on this forum that will point out that many things I probably own are made in China. My iPod, Computer parts, clothes, etc. Okay, I get it. But, really, I always try not to buy from China. Anywhere else is fine. I suppose I have had bad luck with their exports in the past and I make a concious effort to buy American first or anywhere other than China second. At least when I buy my handguns, they are made in America or somewhere else other than China. They just make too much crap over there. End of rant.

So you are saying she would have paid $700 for a bag if it had been made in some other country... yikes. Wish I had your money... ;-)

I'm not going to say anything about it being made in China. I just don't get why anyone would even want to purchase a purse that costs $700. No matter where it was made. But that's just me!

Slow down there. I'm not paying for it. She is. She didn't buy it anyways. But, if she wanted to spend $700 only ONCE and it was on a purse from Italy or France or something, AND especially if it was HER money, then go ahead. But, not for some crap made in China.

I'm a firm believer in quality now but there is absolutely no way I'd let my wife pay $700 for a purse. I don't care if I were a bazillionaire, I still wouldn't pay $100 for a pair of blue jeans at the mall. You can figure $695 of that purse is purely for the name and some 12 year old in china got 50 cents to make it.

But how much did the components to make it cost?

Example: the store I work at (we sell big Hawaiian-style shirts that are PERFECT for CC) sells some pricey shirts (the avg right now is about $120). Most are made in China, but the silk for some is made in Italy. All of our prints are officially copyrighted, which costs money. And our productions standards are incredibly high compared to other companies that sell comparable shirts.

I do have to say I know where you're coming from, though. When I first started working there, I came from a 10-year history at JC Penney. I thought there was no way someone would spend $120 on a shirt. Now I have to stifle my laughter when someone tries to tell me how important they are because they're spending $120 on a shirt. (They ARE important, especially in these times, but no, I probably don't give them the same amount of attention as the customers who come in once or twice a month and spend $1000 at a time with their black American Express cards.)

Sheesh, I've become such a snob since I started working there. /sigh

I totally understand where you're coming from, but what is your brain/life worth to you?

For those of us who ride motorcycles, it's my opinion that our brain/life ain't worth as much as others who don't ride.

Personally, I don't wear a brain bucket. I'm thinking if I hit the pavement at 60 or more I'm going to wish I were dead anyway. Plus it's like buying a convertible and leaving the top up.

It's definitely safer to be on 4 wheels than 2. So yeah, we don't value our lives THAT much :D

I thought about this a little bit, and put it in terms of my/my wife's life...

I have a thing for watches. It's kinda silly, but just as we all like our guns, this is something I like.

My wife never likes it when we go to the jewelry stores/Macy's, etc in the mall.. I've only got 3 watches I would say are ridiculous in terms of cost, but recently I bought a Movado for $1,250 (on sale even) and she promptly bought one of those $700 purses (don't remember the brand). What could I say?

And it's kinda the same thing with our guns, isn't it? We buy another gun that sits in a safe 90% of the time.. At least she'd use the purse, right?

IMO, if you can afford it and like it - buy it. You only get to live once, so enjoy it and the things in it.

I was amazed at the high cost of motorcycle helmets, the high end.

At least that can save your life, when was the last time you heard of a designer leather bag saving someones life.

My girlfriend has a few coach bags (all less than $300), and she bought them herself or got them as gifts. I don't see my self ever laying down the cash for one.

The thing that really drives me nuts is Ugg "boots" (more like tall slippers). 1) you can't wear them in the rain, snow, cloudy days.... 2) they make no sense at all and 3) they look hookerish (IMHO). Oh well, she will never understand guns, and I will never understand Ugg or Coach.
