    North Dakota soon...
Just a minute ago I heard someone try to enter the front door of my house. The dogs went crazy and I got the 870 in my hands, safety on w/ one in the chamber and six in the tube, and called my dad on my phone to tell him what was up and I was going to put the phone in my pocket so he could he hear me investigate outside. No one was found but luckily everything turned out ok.

About five minutes later someone tries the door again. I'm on high alert waiting for it to happen again.

edit just happened again update soon

Dad wants to be sure it wasn't wind or something from the incoming storm that did it. Well...ok I guess. Keeping the 870 close tonight and the phone closer.

A question for you guys: how did I do in checking the house? Going outside would've been out of the picture if I didn't have dad watching my back. I think in hindsight the first thing I should've done before investigating should've been to call the police as soon as it happened and I established the fact it wasn't wind or something. Door knobs being checked out makes a distinctive noise though.

Call police and stay inside. Turn on the porch light and off any interior lights in adjoining room(s) when checking outside through windows/doors.

Probably just one of those guys selling discount beef..........

Seriously; glad every thing turned out okay. Hopefully, it was just the wind, or maybe a four legged varmint?

Take the shotgun and blow the front door handle off. That should stop the noise if it was wind. If it was someone trying the front door, the sight of the door handle being taken off by a shotgun should have the same effect on stopping the noise.

Question - If your dad heard you being beaten to death on the phone because you went outside to check, how would he be able to help you before it's too late?

Sorry, but to answer your question on how did you do - I am going to say yoou failed. But I have done the same thing so We have that in common. LOL

    LOL

At least dad could have sent the cops/medics via 911. :dunno: Might at least be the difference between hospital stay that night or morgue visit the next am when passers by find the body.

    I'd have done the same.

lol, one time we had a drunk lady try to force her way into our house (townhouse style) because she thought it was the neighbor's door.. It took about 5 minutes of trying to convince her that her drunken idiot friends were nextdoor. All this with a newborn baby sleeping.
She kept trying the handle and banging on the door. The first time I was up like a shot with a G23 nearby.
Go figure, it's hard to reason logically with a drunk person, someone should inform the police of that :)

The answer is: call the police immediately next time. Let them have to shoot someone if need be. It's not that exciting.

I gotta agree with Trigger on this one. You worry about the inside of your house (where you are) and your family 1st, possessions 2nd.
The police are there as a resource, and overall a damn fine resource, that you should use. However, I'll give you kudos on having a 12ga nearby and ready to roll!!
