This morning, a old beat up ready mix truck operated by Central Indiana Ready Mix based in Solsberry IN, blew a stoplight on west third street in Bloomington.

The driver never even tried to slow down and did not even honk his horn. I was in the left lane, stopped going east on third street. The ready mix driver was in the right lane going east and the other other traffic was already starting to enter the intersection. Thankfully they saw him coming as the went through the intersection and stopped. The van he almost hit was being driven by a lady and she had two or three kids in the back.

If I was in the right lane, the ready mix truck would have crushed me. The truck was most likely overloaded and or had crappy brakes. Over the last few months I have seen these trucks driving on the wrong side of the road, not stopping at stop signs and even broken down on the road.

I've been told another reason they don't want to stop fast is since they are overloaded, a quick stop will cause the concrete to spill out the front of the truck on the road.

Do me a favor and stay clear of these trucks. It is only a matter of time before they will be involved in a fatal accident.

Years ago I saw a concrete truck do a panic stop for a red light in Valparaiso at RT 30 and 2 and a bunch of concrete came out on the road. Light changed and the driver kept going.

Somebody got killed on 3rd St. (US 42) in Terre Haute the other day. Rear-ended by a semi going 50 mph. NO sign that brakes were even applied.

Frankly, I'm surprised it doesn't happen once a week. If you are crossing 3rd St., there is no way in hell you cross the moment it turns green because there will be a semi trying to beat the yellow.

A friend I worked with was killed sitting at a red light in Terre Haute. Again, rear-ended by a semi. He never knew what hit him. Pushed his car 550 feet down the road.

They need to harshly crack down on semi's traveling excessively fast. MAJOR fines (start at $1000 if you are caught speeding in a semi).

Hopefully, you called the concrete company and registered a complaint.

Remember 1 thing, a fully loaded concrete truck weighs 100,000 lbs +. Don't cut in front of them when your in the left lane and need to make a right turn. You shouldn't do it at all, but big trucks can easily kill you and your family. Give them plenty of room, they DO NOT stop fast, and it's not worth your life for the extra seconds you save by getting around him. Not saying anybody did this or saying your wrong OP, just making a statement.

I can say though, I've had this happen to me, only I was driving the truck. I was going the speed limit, I always obey the posted speeds. A light changed on me on 37 in martinsville, I hit the brakes quick, they lock up, and my rather long flat bed goes into a skid, the only choice at this point is to get off the brakes and on the horn! Scared the hell out of me, luckily, everybody was looking and let me get through, rather politely I might add.

No passing was involved. It was a four lane road, I was in the left lane, he was in the right. Never even tired to stop as he shot into the intersection. I had no problem stopping for the red light.

Your probably not going to get one. Honestly, if they keep their trucks in that kind of condition, they probably do t really care as long as they are making money. A call to the ISP or DOT might be a better idea.

Understood, I was just saying. Sounds like somebody might have been day dreaming or just getting pushed hard by the boss?

We were just talking about some of this at work. I work construction so we have dump trucks back-hoe's etc. We all think its a good idea if they made Drivers ed students use a driving simulator and have to drive a semi or other large truck and have people pull out in front of them, follow to close.. all the stuff that anyone who's ever drivin something bigger than a pick-up has had to deal with.

That's a good idea, maybe ride in one for a couple hours, nothing like feeling it to really make you realize how long it takes to stop and how much work it is to maneuver one of them quickly!

I doubt most would even understand the point. I love how concerned everyone is about kids, yet drive like fools/maniacs around a school bus.

I've had it so many times I don't know anymore :(

I've seen a guy nearly plow into the back of a police car because he was to good to go 25mph in the school zone. That cop stopped, turned his lights on and let him have an earful. :rockwoot:

I see this everyday the buses run. Signs are out, lights are on and they are ignored.

I would venture to say on a good day, only about 6 cars run my stop arm... I've had cops to township employees, other buses, parents all run my stop arm.... Sad thing is where they run it at.
