Just got my first week under my belt and have a exam coming up this following Monday... i will admit i am very much worried about doing well on this exam.... my question for you that have been through this program how hard are these exams? How common are test failures? we where provided with a rough run through of the exam but times was extremely limited trying to copy down this material so i fear i do not have enough information on what exactly to focus on. ( i understand no one here can help me with that nor do i expect anyone too) mainly wondering what where your results how well did the vast majority do and should i be stressing out as much as i already am. I tend to take extremely detailed notes and i fear i could get lost in information that does not pertain to the exams.

    Thank you

The exams aren't that hard. You should do fine without any help. However, if you are really worried, find guys from the larger PDs, and I assure you that they have study guides issued to them by their departments. I didn't use any, and still graduated with honors.

Thank you Honors is something im strongly trying for im working on obtaining a few truly doubt that would be the case for the first exam though and i do know not to trust them completely but combined with my notes i do believe they would be a great tool.... currently we have a class of 118ish how many can we expect to loose academically and in general?

You'll probably lose 2 or 3 due to academics, which honestly is shocking. Overall, you probably won't lose more than 5 with the others failing the practicals, firearms most notably.

kinda sad hear firearms as being the kicker i really think the scoring needs to be harder i got hired at a time my department was switching firearms so i got a lot of range time in between the two weapons (course even timed and the targets do rotate) i have been averaging around a 237 out of 240 and im a rifle guy but i do hear there firearms training is excellent and the low light is quite a lot of fun very much looking forward to that break out week....... but i have another question for you regarding the testing how many get at least one test failure? sounds like it would be fairly low regarding the number u have given me

The exams are tough if one does not apply themselves. The failure rate for basics has risen in the past five years. The main reasons are exam scores with firearms being next. We lost five in one day in my class due to cheating. We graduated with 15 less than when we started.

FWIW I was at the academy all this past week myself. I just finished patrol rifle instructor class. It was a fun although very exhausting week. Glad it is done. We also lost a few in this class.

ILEA is very rigid in their standards. If you need some current study guides PM me.

****Correction-We lost ONE (1) out of 18 for PR Instructor******

Your toughest exam by far will be criminal law. Don't worry, just study the info and you will be fine. 20K officers before you thought the same way. Don't sweat it.

You'll do fine. I would compare the level of difficulty of police academics to taking 100 and 200 level liberal arts college courses. The material is hard, but not overwhelming. The toughest test for me was the EVOC written test. I passed, but my score was low enough to slightly hurt my GPA come graduation day.

Just study, then study some more. When you're tired of that, go for a three mile run and study again.

    Godspeed, brother in arms!

EVOC written exam? What happened? We lost four in one day for cheating on that exam for some reason. FWIW my lowest score was the DT written exam. I just plain old did not study the pressure point body diagram portion. It caught me of guard bigtime.

I thought the exams were easy and answers were spoon fed to you. They want you to pass. As far as firearms, get out your .45 cal pencil and poke a couple holes in case of flyers.

diffidently not spoon fed anymore that being my opinion these are not test anyone would be able to just pass even if you where to sit through the class if you where not taking extensive notes.... we all created are own study guides from the first test and this upcoming one as well but in all honestly that only cover about 25% of the material that was on the test

EVO or EVOC = emergency vehicle operations or emergency vehicle operation course

    DT = defensive tactics

As far as weapon retention goes there isn't much that isn't common sense, it's the practical application that can't really be taught over the internet. You'd have to find someone that would try to fight you for your (red/blue) gun over and over again.

Department SOPs dictate levels of holster retention, but most recommend multi level as many officers who have been rendered unconscious weren't shot as the bad guy couldn't figure out how to remove the gun.
