I have a friend (that shall remain un-named) that shouldnt own a firearm due to being totally unsafe.

    Evidence that demands that verdict:

1: A month or so after I met him, 1990 or so, he was showing me his "lady S&W" in his bedroom and I noticed what looked like a bullet hole through his wooden bedpost. Sure enough, when I asked him about it he told me his gun went off when he was cleaning it.

2: I was riding shotgun with him wit another of my friends in the seat behind me. he hands the back seater his pistol to "check out" 30 seconds later,My friend in the back seat hjllers "Whoa!, this things loaded!" I could have shot John (me) in the back!, to which my gun owning friend responds..."Its Ok, the safety was on."

3: We go into the gun store cause he wants to trade his PT92 for a 6-gun. Well, he hands it to the gun store owner, who exclaims a second later. "This things loaded!" to which my friend answere "Its ok, the safety is on." The owner berates him for 10 minutes until he decides to leave with his tail tucked. Fortunately, He sold it to pay a debt he owed me and now doesnt own a gun at all.

The world is a safer place.

    Anyone else have similar stories?

Judging by the way they handle and/or talk about guns, I think about half the people that come through the gunshop on a given weekend have no business owning them. :dunno:

The Constitution says they have the right, but just because they CAN, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.

I think that no politician who lobbies against firearm ownership or concealed carry should be allowed to own a firearm. Instead, often reality is that these folks both own and have carry permits for firearms in places where carry permits are rare.

I have a very distant relative that is a Special Deputy for Marion County. Special Deputy is actually his title, but you should think of it as a label given to Barney Fife.

He was cleaning his wife's Glock 22, who is also a Deputy but not a Special Deputy. Winds up shooting through his hand and into his leg. When this was relayed to me, I went to get a Glock to show how idiotic this is. It is a simple thing to field strip a Glock. You drop the mag. Cycle the slide and verify the empty chamber. Then you point it in a direction that is safe in case you screwed up and pull the trigger. Then you pull the slide back slightly with you hand at the back of the grip and remove the slide.

At no time should your hand be in front of the muzzle. No way should the muzzle be pointing at your or others body parts.

The thing that pissed me off most about doing this in a house with kids is that he wouldn't just man up and say: "I screwed up." I would respect that. He just makes all kinds of excuses for why it happened. For some reason he never came to the reason of "I'm a moron", which would have been correct.

I saw a guy @ Pop Guns actually have a misfire and take his gun out to the counter and point it right at the sales guy. Needless to say, he got yelled at for a few minutes, came back in, got his stuff, and rightfully got the boot.

Some people have never been given the attention they need, or no one has spent the time to educate them rather than just yell at them. For example, I was very fortunate to have my father spend time with me and teach me safety and the basics of marksmanship. Others have come across good friends or even "mentors" that will take them under their wing to teach them. And some people unfortunately have neither.

It isn't necessarily our individual responsibility to educate everyone we come into contact with, however, collectively we are much better off by trying to educate those that are interested in the 2A, self preservation, and shooting sports. The more knowledgable and safe advocates we have the better. It is much easier to do this than to convert someone who is against the idea in the first place, but we all spend plenty of time trying to argue with some of those folk.

Now...that being said, I am also smart enought to recognize that some people are helpless and no amount of attention or training will get through their thick skull, and those people need to be avoided. However, I would say most of the individuals that fit the OP's category lack basic confidence with their handling skills and are eager to learn. They only "pretend" to know what they are doing so they don't feel out of place in what sometimes can feel like an "elitist" crowd.

    Just my :twocents:

I did not know anyone into firearms... but a little common sense, some youtube and a few questions at the gunstore helped out alot.:D
I did know one kid that had a ltch before I did, who thought he could go around busting peoples car windows out with his pistol. However the police took his gun and kept it, I was not present for any of that situation, I just knew him when I was younger and heard about it.

Don't forget those who were born with a gun in their hand ("I've been huntin' all mah lahf") and already know all there is to know about safe and efficient gunhandling.

Agreed. That is where the "thick skull" comes into play and avoidance is recommended!

Always learning is the preferred approach!

Sometimes I wonder of these guns "cleaning" accidents are just a cover for "I was screwing around, twirling my gun like a cowboy, practicing my quick draw, and [strike]accidentally discharged my[/strike] pulled the trigger of a loaded firearm."

My brother in-law should not touch a firearm, he wields rifles like they are toys, I can't tell you how many times I have jumped down his throat about strafing me with a loaded rifle! And he just blows it off like I am the stupid one!:xmad: I agree that some people have no respect when it comes to owning and handling a firearm!

I personally know quite a few people that shouldn't be allowed to own ANYTHING remotely dangerous let alone a firearm. I don't care if it's something as innocent looking as a butter knife. If you don't trust someone with a firearm what makes you think you can trust them with other dangerous items. Whether you get shot or stabbed in the heart at the end of the day you're still dead.

Oh, yeah. And this guy in a classic clip I'm sure everyone has seen:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhIJOVD8hwY&has_verified=1[/ame]

When a slide that is back with a loaded mag in it, the gun isn't unloaded. Why?

    (Trick question.)

BECAUSE A FIREARM IS ALWAYS LOADED.

Well, I once had a renter who was a Bachelor's degree RN, and she could NOT figure out an old fashioned, round dial thermostat. Daddy had to come and move her out. If she were to ever buy a firearm... oh my.

"If you can not make the bullets fit into your revolver",you have NO business owning a gun.................unfortunatley this is a family member. Hence he was not smart enough to know the caliber of said firearm when purchasing the ammo......."Wouldn't the bigger bullet due more damage?" And yes he has a LTCH.
