I am debating on which one. One day I hope to own a super 1911, right now I do not. I understand the 22/45's place; but, would I benefit from owning one now over a regular Mark III that I can buy tomorrow and start getting cheap trigger time with?

If you're interested in getting a 1911 then it's a no-brainer... go for the 22/45. The grip is thinner than that of a 1911 but the ergos are the same (except for the thumb safety). The 22/45 can be had for $250 which is a steal for what you get. And they're available everywhere.

The regular Mark III has a grip angle that is similar to a Glock and IIRC the same as a P-38. Myself, I prefer the 22/45, and it's a lot cheaper.

Edit: If you can find a Mark II 22/45 it won't have the stupid magazine safety.

I prefer the steel frame Ruger MK series over the 22/45s. I don't think you'd benefit from the 22/45 if what you want is a standard grip MKIII. If you can shoot the MKIII well, you'll still be able to shoot the 1911.

Yeah, but a Mk II 22/45 with an aftermarket upper is almost weightless!! Talk about a "trail gun"!

How about this: handle and shoot both and see which one you like. Remember the rule of Gun Preference (I forget which one of Kirk's Laws this is)--when it comesthe subjective is objective!

i've shot both quite a bit and have no real preference. i believe kirk to be on the right track. shoot both and see which one is the most comfortable. fwiw, i don't think you could go wrong with either one.

i got the regular mk3 and i love it. from my understanding the 22/45 is made with a 45 grip so its more comfortable in the hands of 45 shooters, so they dont have to get used to another gun while shooting in competitions... or something like that

Just a thought here, have you thought about buying a 45 cal pistol and also buying a 22 caliber conversion kit for it? GUNS AMERICA has several of the 22 conversion kits and it seems like you could have the cheap plinker and the 45 caliber carry pistol both this way.

well, I just got back from Mcsports here in Bloomington and picked up a new 22/45. It was 249.99. I picked up a brick of Win expert .22 hollow points, a pair of yellow lensed safety glasses, a 3 pack of 'hot lips' 1022 mags and got it all for 335. Not a bad haul for the stuff I got.

    +1 for McSPorts!

Congratulations on your new pistol. Let us know what you think of it and how it shoots. I am a fan of the Ruger Mk II pistols myself and have not shot or handled the 22/45 models. If it shoots as good as one of the members on here has posted, you are going to love it.

Was the $249 price a sale price or regular? Was looking at these in the latest cabela's ad, like the looks of the 22/45 better. Cabela's has sale price of $249 on the 22/45, but i could stop at mc sports in kokomo on saturday and not have to deal with going to hammond

There are a lot of different options for the 22/45, so $250 could be a sale price for some or regular price for the others. Go to Ruger's website to see all the options they have.

It was 249.99 at McSports here in Bloomington IN. That was regular price that was consistent with Gunbroker.com.

I took it out into the shed and put 5 regular velocity and 5 subsonics through it for functionality before I get to the FNS shoot tomorrow night. I am pretty excited about getting to the shoot!

no problems with either velocity ammo.
