How high would your taxes have to be, before you gave up and left the country? We are in such a mess right now, our taxes are bound to go up in our lifetime. What's it going to take?

We are following the same road as Britain. An article from this week says that their middle-class is going to be paying up to 83% of their money to the government in various taxes.

Middle Britain's tax rates 'could rise to 83%'

Less than what I am paying now. As far as I am concerned, everyone (and I mean everyone) should pay no more than 10% for all federal, state, and local taxes and let them figure out how not to waste it.

People paid up to 70+ percent under Carter.

I think it's academic and sophomoric to single out the percentage we pay in taxes as a sole factor in determining where our breaking point is.

I'm not sure where I'd go if I did get fed up though. Seems like most other places in the world are either taxed at a higher rate, outlandishly expensive, or are so politically unstable and dangerous it wouldn't be worth it.

Just getting people to think about it. Its the old "frog in the water" situation here. We are used to getting robbed already.

it would depend on what my family and I get in return. If we got everything we ever wanted with no hesitation, then I would give 100% and work hard to provide the government with it.

Where were you when socialism and communism was tried and failed before?

I would pay up to 89%. After that it is impossible for me to give at least 10% of my income "pre-tax" away by choice. Not that I believe I have to give at least 10%, but I want to.

Actually though, I plan to opt out by creating a permaculture based community, going off grid, and growing my own food. I just need to make enough money to pay the king for the privilege of growing that food. So as long as they don't take my crops as a tax...

Are you supposed to pay a sales tax when you barter?

Your freedom is directly proportional to the percentage of your earnings you are "allowed" to keep.

If your master keeps 100% of what you earn for him, then you are a slave. Even if he puts a roof over your head and feeds you.

For this poll, assume that 100% tax means everything is socialized for all. Transportation, education, medicine, food, housing, everything. A veritable utopia.

No doubt. But we're already boiling and that should tell you something.

I don't think the breaking point is going to be a line in the sand with threats not to cross it. I think the America people will bear what they are asked to bear indefinitely. We have a respect for the law too ingrained into our collective cultural psyche. Which is both good and bad.

Some random act of SHTF which might even be unrelated to the big picture is likely to be the match that sets fire to the gunpowder. That being said, I would LOVE an Atlas Shrugged movement of some sort.

I dont know my breaking point, but I do know I won't be leaving.

This is the problem. No matter how bad I imagine things getting here, I can't think of any place that would be better. I for one will stay here and try to fix things. And also try to make some income I don't report if it really gets ridiculous.

Nothing will ever change until the 16th amendment is gone. This is the reason I support the fair tax. The 16th as it is written gives the crooks UNLIMITED taxing power.

That will make you a criminal. If 90% of this board would arrest you for wearing a hat in the wrong place, they would arrest you for "cheating" the government out of your money.

If I could convince the wife, we would have already "fled the country." By that I mean subsistence living, off of the grid.

Many of us are already "fleeing the country", metaphorically speaking, by seeking tax shelters and barter. The threshold for those people is effectively "below what I'm paying now".
