You act like you know him. I do. I grew up with him. His dad was the chief of police here in Kokomo. I don't work at Stellantis but I am a millwright for GM and have been for over 33 years. I know Shawn from his time as an electrician. He went thru apprenticeship just like I did which is roughy 7,850 hours plus you go thru schooling with at least an 85% passing grade. No freebies for your accreditation either. People get dropped for grades. Try working 8+ hours a day plus going to Ivy Tech taking algebra, trig, etc after work. Most people are married with kids too. Easy? Not hardly. There is homework, tests, etc. People have gotten divorced going thru apprenticeship. I trust Shawn to bargain for the members. He is not stupid or a member of the good ole boy club and threw out big numbers w/ less hours for a reason. It's all about politics and bargaining just like any contract. Hopefully both sides meet in the middle and we are all winners or feel like we are. I have been on the losing end of so many contracts working for GM Kokomo Ops that it ain't funny but I would never work anywhere else. My time is done and I want to retire but I can't cause I got screwed over. I have zero benefits if I retire. None. Zip. Fair? Nope. I dedicated 33 years and beat my body down to nothing. 19th surgery is coming up first part of November. Hopefully I can be made whole contractually instead of tearing my body down by working so I can have medical, dental, vision and even death benefit insurance. Hopefully.
You picked the wrong Trade Union my friend. I came home from out of town and went to a quarter night and I was handed my journeyman certificate.
Like the typical Union Mechanic gets his or hers.

Now that the jokes are over, with taking my apprenticeship education, for 9 months a year, for the first 4 years, I drove to our Union hall from out of town two nights a week for school. I was working on the DelMarVa beaches, it averaged about 300 miles round trip.

Lawyers have been doing well since there ever was such a profession.

    Same with hookers.

The two oldest professions and neither are unionized.
Hookers have no benefits at all. And most have a short career window.
Public Defender attorneys don't seem to do that well.
Neither come with the three wins a Union Trade comes with.
    Pension, Annuity and a 401.

    Edit,
    Woops

I wish you'd talk to your friend about not losing half of the country with his political narratives. About not wearing controversial statement socialist shirts and such.

A lot of you guys are my friends and I'm rooting for you to come out of this well.

Shawn Fain is not my friend and he's made it clear that he does not want my favor. He sews the same seeds of division as Biden and Obama. And SO SO sadly, he represents you. :(

Are there many of the big 3 auto plants here? I remember when Indy had a GM plant and a smaller Ford one. We were once rivaling Detroit for Automotive productions but Detroit won. Stutz had a big factory downtown and with the races and all.. Can anyone name the major auto plants of the big 3 in IN. Id figure they would all be in Mexico, thanks a lot NAFTA.

    I'm being ******? Please
    Are they Union employees?
Do non union workers save in case they get laid off or who is buying what they manufacture are Union and can go on strike?
If not maybe one should make better employment choices.
Makes sense... then the Union workers will have no suppliers. No suppliers no product. No product no job. That really is cutting off one's nose to spite the face.

Why would I work for the union to have less pay and benefits than I currently have?

Then be told when to walk off the job.

What happens if the big 3 start reducing their offers instead of increasing them?
This right here... What happens when the big three decide they have had enough and it is all together cheaper to pull the plug on American manufacturing. Maybe. they decide if the union members want jobs they need to take less than they did before as an incentive for the big 3 to not move out of the US...

The UAW is lead by an open socialist/communist. The only thing scarier than that, is there are actually people on this forum defending an open socialist/communist. I know they have the union members brainwashed into thinking there is a strategy. Striking is what happens when the strategy fails. Unless they are following the general socialist/communist strategy, which is to make everyone depend on government handouts in the long run. The strategy can't honestly be, lets hurt our members pocket books during Bidenflation, really put the screws to our memberships families. Cause if the strategy is to hurt your members, during a time of economic downturn when companies generally lay people off, it is a very very bad strategy. One made by a fool, or someone who is crueler than I could be. Eventually people's children get hungry.

And don't forget, people pay dues to be in the union! So, in essence, they are paying to strike and hope their leadership doesn't royally F things up for them...

Here's the corporate website for the plant that shut down. Y'all get time go read peoples reviews of working there. If that's the UAW benefitting the workers then I think they should have found better representation. The Molds that were there were shipped to south texas to make the border crossing to their plant down there.

I was an associate. I had a 401k and health insurance. Now I am a partner/owner. As a partner, we distribute the profit among us and we decide how to use the money. We pay for our own health insurance and fund our own retirement. I'll just say that I am happy with my career choices.

As for public defenders, first, they chose that path. Second, if full time, they likely have a decent retirement plan and health insurance. If contract, they decide what to do with the money and how to invest.

It's all about individual choices in this biz. Plenty of lawyers complain about their situation....and they all made choices that put them where they are.

[ETA] I just thought I'd add that all lawyers are not rich. Not even close. Many probably could have done as well or better in the UAW. Many do OK. Some get very wealthy. Some are comfortable. It's a very wide range. The annual income range is from about $40k to....8 or 9 figures. A lot more than you would think are in the $70-140k range. Outside of the big cities, maybe a majority.
