About 15 or so years ago my WWII and Korean War veteran father was up here visiting and I took in to the range with my 1942 Springfield M1. I opens the case and handed him the rifle and a loaded clip. He looked everything over for a few seconds and said he was pretty sure he could remember how everything worked. He then loaded the rifle and fired eight rounds. The look on his face of quiet satisfaction will stay with me forever. We took turns putting several clips through the M1 that afternoon and later on the ride home I asked him how long since he last fired one. He paused a few seconds and said “Two days before he shipped out to come home from Korea.” Then he stated it a lot more pleasant to fire it on a range where all the bullets are flying in the same direction.

I think about that day with him every Veterans Day. I miss you Dad.
