With the warm weather we've had the last few days it would be a good idea to do a tick check after venturing outdoors. It doesn't take them long to get active once the temp stays above freezing a couple of days. Happened to be out in the yard for a bit this evening and when I got back inside felt something crawling on the back of my neck. Yep, a tick. Gave my legs a quick look and found another on my sock.

Ticks already out in Perry County? Surely not.

I just used the last of mine last fall and tried to order some and could only find it about 1/4 of the strength as what I had for 3 years. Are you finding the same as usual?
I bought (2) one-gallon containers of Quali - Pro Bifenthrin I/T 7.9 F. (7.9% bifenthrin) One gallon is supposed to cover 10 acres. Used it last year to stop army worms. Did not have any ticks, ants, crickets, spiders, or water bugs after the initial application. It’s still available...

Son in law is stationed at USMC Base Quantico. Last spring the ticks there were like nothing I've ever seen. You couldn't be in the grass in their tiny yard for 30 seconds without picking up several of the nymph sized ones. Like the size of a pin head. They are damn near impossible to see until they swell up a bit.

Our then one year old grandson had one leave the classic bullseye on his back back in late April. His pediatrician has been keeping an eye on things and the kid hasn't really had any symptoms. In the last month my daughter noticed one of his nipples was red and irritated. Antibiotic cream didn't do anything to help it. She mentioned it to a doc yesterday at the Naval immunization clinic she took the kids to for their shots. He took a peek at it and immediately got her an appointment to see a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Walter Reed next week. Said that it's one of the lesser know Lyme disease symptoms.

Military housing won't spray for ticks because some people object to the usage of 'harmful' pesticides. I'm taking a sprayer next time we go out and I'm going scorched earth on the little monsters.

Tips and tricks for how to spray for ticks? I recently bought this fogger and just bought bifenthrin. Do I just spray everything near my house? Trees, bushes, grass? What about the exterior of the house? How far away from the house should I spray? (I have 110 acres, so probably not all of that.) How long should I stay in one area / how thick should I apply it? Any "best practices" would be appreciated.

This is a new house on mostly forested land. I really would like to "go nuclear" on these ticks and kill all of them, as much as possible.

Spray all around the house right up to the foundation with a handheld sprayer. I wouldn't use a fogger, but that's just me.

Buy a pull behind sprayer and spray the whole yard, at least the parts you mow and the places you walk regularly.

About 15 years ago I brought one back on my shoulder from a backpacking trip along the Big South Fork in Tennessee in late January. It dang near killed me until the local doctors finally figured out I had Rock Mountain Spotted Fever. Ticks are no joke.

I worked with a guy in the 90s that came back from Tennessee with that. Went from 230 pounds to 180 in no time flat. He eventually recovered, but died in his late 50s while waiting on a liver transplant.

Tick tubes can help break the cycle, but you need a lot of them. Luckily they are easily made though homemade ones may not be as effective.

Been saving up tp and paper towel tubes all winter. Looks like I'll be getting some out this weekend. Next week is supposed be back into the 60's again.

I've been using permethrin livestock premises spray on the yard and on the cotton in the tubes. Works good, is cheap, and is relatively safe. Plus the mix can be used on clothing.

Yeah, the diseases they carry can kill you dead. Even if they don't kill you, you may wish you were dead. I've had, and know several other people who've had Lyme. Nasty stuff, and if not treated quickly can cause all sorts of long term issues.

Weird day today, seen two wasps at work alive in a bunk of wood.
Then got home and a hawk flew up from a grass field and landed in a tree.
Had a garden snake in its grasp, couldnt believe it as it was 40 degrees at the time.
If I didnt see it with my own eyes,I wouldnt have believed it.
Maybe all this rain pushed the snake out of its hiding spot, who knows!
