I actually took the time to do a search and couldn't find anyhing specific. So here goes.

What, from a legal standpoint, constitutes a suppressor? If a flash hider manages to quiet the report of a firearm, say as a bi-product. does that automatically make it a suppressor? and therefore mean you have to go through all the ATF garbage? or is it just good to go?

Look at the XM177 moderator- it removes about a decibel from the report.

All of the carbines Colt sold in the 70's and 80's with one of these had to go back so SNs could be engraved (almost always matching the rifle so they are highly collectible).

I saw one X177 for sale, a RR MG, that had one. It was rare because it still had it's moderator. Supposedly Colt removed a lot of them instead of serializing them before sending them back out after '86 because noone thought it was worth it.

This unfired XM177 MG with original moderator was going for over $30k.

I've seen this one too, on ARF, and it's been there for quite a long time.
