A coworker of mine got caught up in this mess over the weekend. He flew out to Colorado for a funeral on Friday and was set to fly back on Monday morning. His flight was at 05:50. He said he got an email at 03:45 to tell him the filght was canceled. He found one other airline with a flight back to Indy, but they wanted $3800 for a one-way ticket. He wound up flying Frontier to Cedar Rapids, IA and rented a car and drove the 5.5 hours back.

Southwest feels no obligation to its customers. They operate like many of the insurance companies out there; you give them money and they sort of, kind of, sometimes act like they're going to provide the service you paid for. If they don't you'll face a gauntlet of misinformation, long hold times, flat out lies and further refusal to provide customer support in hopes that you'll just get tired and go away. That's how they do business.
They actually do provide the service you paid for, but most people don't realize it

If you read the fine print of the common carrier agreement that your ticket is issued under, they only are selling you transportation from point A to point B. No guarantee or legal obligation that it will be on the agreed date or at the agreed time

It isn't just canceled or delayed flights. We've been trying to get back a baggage fee my daughter paid for ahead of time because she was flying with a saddle. The flight got canceled, they couldn't get her on another flight for days and we had to go to another airline. We aren't even fighting them on the price of the ticket, just return the baggage fee for a bag they never handled for a flight that never occurred. Their CS is nonexistent.

If anyone involved is on twitter, complain about it there. They usually have someone(s) whose job is just to answer such things, and because the whole (twitter) world can see the complaint it usually attracts immediate attention if it makes them look bad
