And it scared the crap out of a bunch of folks at the Davos Conference. Can't say as I blame them, really. The prospect of a new global or Pacific War between Japan/China/The US and even Taiwan is a scary thing. Especially since it would be over worthless rocks in the middle of the ocean. I really don't want to see this heat up, since it's just a pissing match to see who has the bigger wang and it would inevitably pull us into the conflict. And that's the last thing we need now or at any time in the future.

Always was of the opinion it's time for Japan to get its own armed forces. A real military, not that pseudo-military defense force its got going on.

Likely this will become a giant pissing match and not much more...for the immediate future. There is plenty of senior leadership both military and civilian in China that believe that war is inevitable. With that attitude, they're probably right...

IIRC it uses that pseudo-military force because of the post WWII treaty that prevents them from having a real military. Unfortunately that leaves us on the hook to defend 2 of the major enemies of China in that area. Furthermore, I rather doubt any other East Asian nation would be willing to offer much help if we assist the Japanese. Plenty of Koreans, at least, have long memories in that regard.

You sir are correct, it was drafted into their new "constitution" post-surrender. Unfortunately, the agreement we made to make that happen was our immediate call to arms should they be attacked, or declare war, and regardless of who it is against.
