I recently brought my father-in-law's late 1930s Stevens-Browning 320 16ga back to life. It's amazing what a little elbow grease and some cold blue can do! My question is what shot should I be looking for if I want to put a couple of shells through it? I don't believe the barrel is damascus and the gun is in proper working order. Thanks!

I think what you are asking is what shell length. Some of the older shotguns are chambered for 2 1/2 inch shells and some can handle the modern 2 3/4 inch shells. The size of the shot in the shells shouldn't matter.

It is not safe or recommended to use a 2 3/4 inch shell in a shotgun with a 2 1/2 inch chamber. I am sure someone on here could tell you how to measure the chamber or if it's new enough that it isn't necessary.

Thanks! I do think it's 2 1/2 inch. I was more wondering about the shot itself. I had heard that some light birdshot vs heavy #00 buckshot would be easier on the old gun.

Ah ok. I think some low recoil Bird shot would be appropriate. If you can find it in 2 1/2 inch shells. Do you have a good source for the 2 1/2 inch shells? I know they are still produced but have no idea who sells them.

    I have a late 20s Geco 16 GA side by side that needs 16GA 2 1/2 shells.

Cabelas has had them online. I have a new box of 16gauge 2 1/2 shells. Looks like they quit carrying them.

You can find at this site though

Bring that down tomorrow...I want to coon finger it....

I was thinking about bring it to show. It has a TON of history.

My Grandfather was in the Golden Acorn division (87th Infantry). When the Germans surendered the even the Civilians had to turn their stuff in. The GI's piled all the guns up high and then picked thru it for whatever they wanted to take home. My grandfather got this.

Thanks - I'll have to order a box of them just to have. Not sure on the history of this beautiful old gun, but it looked like it hadn't been touched in 40/50 years. I had 30 hours just in stripping, cleaning, cold bluing, and polishing. It's ~ 1939 best I can tell from the serial numbers out there and others posts.

Very nice! Next time you are in any of the stores that sell ammo, Walmart, Big R, Rural King, Dunhams, look around. 16 gauge is still fairly common. I have a couple boxes of new Federal 2 3/4 inch 1 oz. 6 shot. I bought them for an old H&R that used to belong to my uncle.

Those are too long for a lot of 1920s and 1930s 16ga guns. Modern shells are 2 3/4 inch length. But these guns have 2 1/2inch chambers or even 2 9/16inch chambers (seen both)

Will a 2 3/4 inch shell seat in a single shot if it is only supposed to take 2 1/2?

Yes it will. Chamber lengths are with the shell fired. A 2 3/4 shell measures around 2 1/2 until you fire it.

The chamber needs that extra length to allow the shell to open.
